Default SciFi - moon vehicles

this is where I will post my wip of my moon vehicles that I am texturing. Here is the first thing I did, was texture the tires. The body color is only temporary.

Very cool model, your tires are looking very flat i.e. not catching any light in the scene, most tire rubber is infused with a protective material known as carbon black, also referred to by those in the auto industry as a "competitive absorber." The purpose of the carbon black is to absorb sunlight on the surface of the tire, and deflect it from the inner polymers of the tire increase tires life. Refractive index ratio for tire rubber is within the range of 1.8 to 3.9 but I think the average is 2.4

they'll look better when I'm finished. I first had to change the polygons before I could adjust them. This won't be a high resolution mesh so it won't be used for close ups so it wont have any high details added. This is the first time I have done this type of work so it may take me awhile to get used to how to do this. Thanks for the feedback.

got a little more texture on the model, I dropped the yellow, I didn't like it, I don't know right now what color the main body will be. This is the first time I have done this type of texturing so I am enjoying learning something new.

Cool update…the gray is a much better choice, and it looks as tho you have also improved the tire rubber, all steps in the right direction well done!

Thanks, I found a tire texture that I liked. Right now I'm trying to texture inside the tires on the opposite of the one showing in the pic above but I'm have trouble rotating the mesh in modeler.

I messed up and had to start over from the beginning. I'm sure it won't be the last time this happens.

I usually have at least two saves of my object, so that if I mess up on one I can go back to the other. It's saved many a starship from being totally, irrevocably, destroyed.

Great idea, I'll do that. Texturing the inside wheels on those tires over again is really frustrating.

Interesting vehicle. Don't forget to check into Treybor's Serenity tutorial (here on F3D) and read the chapters on texturing. Although his tutorial is for the Serenity, the techniques he shares are usable on any model.

I finally got it back to the way it was before I messed up, I also fixed a couple of things I didn't like before. Secondly, I also saved a backup copy. Before I go any further on the main body, I'm going to read Sean's Serenity tutorial for the texture section.

Do you have the "smoothing" turned on on all the surfaces and is it set at default...89.0 %?
If so, try cranking it down a lot. It looks like it is and making a lot of the mesh look odd.

I've only checked the smoothing for now but I will adjust it later, thanks. BTW, thanks to Bob for releasing his latest greeble pack, I have put his chair in the cockpit. In the last pic is what its supposed to look like but I am changing a few things.

That's looking good. Looking forward to seeing the finished model. Good design by the way.

And speaking of being a moon rover; those better be solid rubber tires.

I would ges they are. I found this mesh and several others like this on Renderosity, they were really cheap. I think I only paid $6.00 for this one.

I must admit, I didn't really get the first version.

But this is so much better now all the details have come together.

One suggestion - the Apollo Moon Rovers were seriously flimsy. Have you consiudered calling it a Moon Hummer?! :-)

I just went with what they were called by the modeler, when I put them in the scene I'm planning I'll probaly rename them for the story I'm planning to write. The story is about a group of miners who find something other than what the mined for. That's all I'm going to say for now about the plot.

Starting a new project, the moon cargo ship. I'm just playing with the colors right now.

When my internet went down I had some time to work on a couple of more. Since these won't be seen close up, I won't be texturing them in high detail.
