Default Star Wars - Death Star in Hyperspace test

This is my first render in almost a year. I have never been without a computer this long but it took awhile to save up enough money to buy a new one. I watched Rogue One (great movie, BTW) and when Tarkin ordered the Death Star from Jedha to Eadu so I was expecting the Death Star to go in hyperspace but it never did so I thought I would try to make a render myself. I'm putting it here in the WIP section because it needs a lot of work and I forgot half of the stuff I used to know how to do. I know the lighting is the biggest problem so any suggestions will be helpful;

Well, welcome back to rendering, I'm aware you had comp problems. Coincidentally I just started my first rough pass at a Babylon 5 hyperspace animation sequence yesterday. Below is a frame from the sequence. WS by Kier Derby, Starfury by Fabio Passaro.

As you said, the lighting's a bit woeful (and I'm no expert in this field tbo). I'd take a look at your cam angle/pos too...image appears a tad 'flat'...a change to add 'depth' and sensation of speed would help. Lastly, maybe tweak the texture, again to add sensation of speed, which is what hyperspace is all about.

I'll post my anim pass for critique too when it comes out of the 'oven' as it will need 'work' i expect. Hope my comments help you take the image forward, and don't take them too personally, I always try not to when I get some negativity - it's meant to help afterall !

Cheers lonewriter

I'd try to light it from the rear, and just have a low blue fill at on the front, to try and get some shadow in there to give it a sinister look. I'd also tilt the DS a bit to make it fit better. The off angle seems to suit movement. I've mocked up what I mean in PS, forgive the crap edges etc

The look I want for the hyperspace tunnel is the first one but I'm having issues in the texture editor in the second version shown.

2 things you can do for the end of the 'tube' - Hide the hole with a lense flare, or if you don't want a flare at the end, extrude the end a few segments and taper it to a point, which is what I have done to mine.

If you're using Lightwave(???) which texture are you using? Try cyclone, STclouds,coriolis or turbulence. Mess with their settings, paying particular attention to the major axis (usually Z) down the centre of the tube. Stretch that axis.

Also, consider that Photoshop could get you a long way once you have a raw render.

It's not perfect, but it's a start.

I would SO use that to get more LW done. "Sorry, can't help with the kids, foot hurts so much. Can I have a drink? Oh, and a kitkat."

I can't thank you enough for that scene, it is just what I'm looking for! I hope to have a new render posted soon. Of course the credit for the hyperspace will go to you. I did use the foot to get out of mowing the yard.

You don't need to bother with credit, call it a freebie
