Default When worlds collide...

I was keen to share this experience because there are obvious poetic (and somewhat ironic) layers to it. I'm not a physical model builder, but I'm completely tuned in to the skill and passion of that other community--the world of physical builds and practical effects. Because all my animation work is amateur level CGI, I regularly encounter vitriol from fans who love old-school effects and have knee-jerk resentment of anything digital.

On with the story...

I met someone online recently who had been working on a 350:1 K'tinga build and was designing a presentation base. Needing inspiration for a graphic, he fired up YouTube to re-watch the opening Klingon battle sequence from TMP. However, he ended up watching a CGI redux that I had published last month.

There is a particular shot of the V'ger cloud that he liked, and so he left a comment in hopes that he could get a clean copy of that particular visual. I was happy to oblige and spent a few hours rendering a custom, massively detailed 300dpi image to his specifications. Here it is:

Apparently there's a small team working on the project, and the electronics people are going to design the back-lighting with flickering LEDs for the stars, random light bursts for the cloud layers, and then animated lights for V'gers weapon trail. The K'tinga will then be mounted above the graphic, enclosed in glass. It's going to be amazing when finished.

So here's the irony: When Kevin Riley released his CG V'ger mesh years ago, he probably never realized that his work would one day make a team of physical builders so giddy. That's very cool!
