Default General/Other - Controlling transparency, PSE or Affinity

2d rather than 3d, but what the heck.

I have Photoshop elements, and Affinity Photo.
I've produced an image I like (In Amberlight 2) which I want to set in space, attached.

So, I want to put stars behind the glowing thingy, so that the black areas become transparent, and the brighter areas less transparent, showing a star background layer I will add separately.

I don't just want to cut away the black areas, but want a gradual effect, so that (for example) dark areas have some stars showing.

Any recommendations on how to do this please?
Nick
