Default LightWave - Texture displacement - can I avoid sharp edges?

I'm trying to work out how to do a texture displacement. What I have in mind is distorting a simple gradient, to make it look a bit more organic. Maybe turning it into a distant milky way / nebula background.

Thing is, for ALL the texture types I try in the displacement layer, I get these sharp colur boundaries. (See screen shot).

Can someone suggest an alternative method that will avoid these problems?

see those numbers below texture type? play with those!
position scale and rotation will change the look too.

I can change the pattern, the scale, the shape, the level of detail.

Can't get rid of those sharp borders though.

I attach a scene file in case anyone can poke around and find a way to distort smoothly...

Turn on world coordinates, it seems to help. in a weird way. makes it more displaced looking.

Yeah, so far I haven't gotten anything better looking with a different approach...

Had a go with world coordinates, looking good!
I also started trying other options that made no sense, and fast bump (on the sky?!) is also interesting.

I think I might be able to get a passable aurora...

That would definitely work as a background of sorts (based on your initial indicated use of this project). Nice!

No tuning yet, I think I will be able to get it better with a bit of experimenting.

I also have a second project in mind, using texture displacement on simple bands to generate a gas giant texture with complexity along the band boundaries, Ideally I would also be able to animate the texture slowly to emulate the kind of cloud movement you see on Jupiter.
