I just went to see Jupiter Ascending, which my girlfriend worked on.

It was awful. But..... I really enjoyed it. It is so over the top and completely out of control I couldn't help it. I am not at all surprised it's bombing and I can entirely see why many won't like it, but it reminded me a hell of a lot of the 1980's Flash Gordon, which is also terrible but fantastically enjoyable.

Not seen it, but I know what you mean... You can pick a LOT of holes in something like Iron Sky, but sometimes you check your brain in as you enter the cinema, and pick it up on the way out...

I recall someone saying that's why they used to have the somewhat silly exciting bit at the start of Bond films, to prepare you for Roger Moore's eyebrow acting and endless knock-knock jokes.

It was a TnA fantasy flick which was prevalent in the 1980's. Lots of nudity, violence, and sexual innuendos. I like it because it's so much like a DnD game. Tough heroes, nasty villains and ridiculous magic items.

I loved the 1980's version of Flash Gordon. I might have to see Jupiter Ascending now.

Last night a friend and I watched "Into the Storm" on DVD. Overall it's not bad for a tornado disaster movie. A bit of a rehash of Twister from a few years back, but different enough to be entertaining.

What did you think of the visuals?

They looked rather good in the trailer, and in the concept art...

Well like I say my girlfriend worked on the VFX for it so I'm naturally biased, although I do think the technical quality is very good generally.

In design terms I'm mixed. All the way through development I hated the look of the ships, with the detached floating pieces and weird - and constant - reconfiguration of the designs. I found a lot of the design 'busy' rather than 'detailed', which is a design trope I hate personally.

But that said.... While watching the film I have to say it doesn't look like anything else out there. Flash Gordon is the closest comparison I can make again because you see a frame from Flash Gordon and you know exactly what it is, this is kind of the same. And the fact they've made something so unique - and uniquely bonkers - is admirable.

The film is all over the place, and it feels a lot like the studio gave $175 million to the Wachowskis because they made the Matrix and said 'Here, do what you want...', and the result is, I'm betting, not at all what the studio wanted. I kind of love it for that.

Just went to see Big Hero 6, which is really great. I thought the third act was a little bit generic in comparison with the rest of it and replacing an action sequence with another sequence of baymax-based comedy would've improved it a lot, but it had built up so much goodwill by the end that it didn't matter too much.

It's an absolute travesty that The Lego movie wasn't nominated for the best animated film oscar because it's clearly the best animated film of last year, but I would be happy with Big Hero 6 picking up the prize instead.

For those who don't know, it's the story of Alan Turing breaking the Enigma code in World War II.

I was up for that, but then I read a little about the film. Turing wasn't autistic / aspergers, nor anti social, nor built the bombe single handed.

If the movie really has that as it's core, it's sadly not about Turing or Bletchley park. They could have just as easily made a film of the actual story, which would have had the merit of being factual.

The focus isn't quite as narrow as my brief description makes it sound. Yes the movie shows the team pulling together and working to build the computer.

I don't go to the theatre anymore so I wait until they come out Blu Ray, I just watched Fury, the WW2 movie starring Brad Pitt, it was very good. This week, I bought season 4 of Game of Thrones and I took out seasons 1-3 and I'm going to have a Game of Thrones marathon this weekend, I hope I finish this weekend because I have jury duty on Monday.
I also got Lucy from Netflix.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Also shit. In fact I hated it, it was so badly put together, so sleazy and such an ugly experience I came out of it angry.

The latest episode of The 100 on Netflix. The series has problems (which one doesn't?) but overall I find it entertaining.

Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise. Was better than I thought. Thought it was going to be a "oh look, repeat time over and over and over, etc" I liked the looks of the Mimics, and the battle suits.

I've been really getting into Murdoch Mysteries, first came across it on Netflix, it's a series out of the UK and Canada about a detective in Toronto at the turn of the century (late 1800's early 1900's) and it's surprisingly well done...

Ovation runs it in the United States as "The Artful Detective"

Really liking this show on Sky Atlantic, still haven't a clue what's going on but enjoying the ride.

Well ive started watching Sons of Anarchy, and the premise to me seemed boring. However i gave it a go and its not to bad. A bit like Breaking Bad with the drugs taken out and Bike gangs put in.

The comparison with Breaking Bad obviously is rubbish they are totally different but for me it was the fact that BB premise to me was boring until i watched it and got hooked.

I've started watching Parasyte, via CrunchyRoll anime.

Not bad so far.

If anyone has recommendations for good stuff on CrinchyRoll, I'd love to hear them, there's a ton of content but much is a bit weak.

Thursday evening a friend and I watched John Wick. A very pedestrian and highly predictable plot line with the usual acting from Keanu Reeves.

Chappie, which I really wanted to love but ended up only liking.

It's outstandingly well directed, it looks and sounds fantastic, and Chappie is a great character, but I didn't like any of the other characters and thats a problem because I think the film wanted me to.

Going to Kingsman tonight. Looking to watch Chappie some time this coming week.

Kingsman is an entertaining romp which spoofs the spy movie genre. Samuel Jackson was hilarious in this one.

Hobbit Battle of the five armies.

Would've enjoyed it a hell of a lot more if it was half the length.

Would have enjoyed it as 2 movies with less filler. The story really does not focus on Bilbo as it should.
