Shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

I've just started this game. Managed to survive one interdiction, and it was the best payday I've had to date, lol. I can see this being a very long, tedious grind for me to get any progress. Plus I need to get me a decent joystick/hotas setup. Mouse and keyboard isn't cutting it....

Oh, just give me a month or so. While I'm not part of the Distant Worlds expedition, I'm already out there quite a ways, and I want to try to meet them at Beagle Point when they arrive. I'm assuming that's where your picture was taken, Tension? So technically, I won't be able to "beat" it, but I'll match it.

DO, I highly recommend the Thrustmaster HOTAS-X. Absolutely the best bang for your buck. You can get it on Newegg for under forty bucks. And don't worry about if it's good enough just because of the cost. Go look up a pilot on YouTube called Isinona, probably the best pure flyer in the game right now, and he uses the Thrustmaster.

Thanks, Jedi. I was flip-flopping between the Thrustmaster or the Saitek, but I've been reading a lot of quality issues with Saitek and lousy customer support, so I was definitely leaning in the Thrustmaster direction. Price difference was pushing me that way too.

Well, I actually own both, and I'm back to using the Thrustmaster, so take from that what you will.

Went with the Thrustmaster - took about a week to get it - nobody caries stock anymore, but Staples was able to order it in for me.
I like it. It could do with a few more hats and buttons, but maybe that's just me. I wish I'd have hung on to my old CH Combatstick and Throttle from back in the Falcon 4.0 days (especially since I just bought the game off Steam, lol).
Am having fun though. Got myself up to about 250K and am ready to think about buying a new ship and replacing the starting Sidewinder. Have to find a shipyard first, lol.

I'd definitely recommend the Thrustmaster HOTAS, it feels pretty solid.

Seriously thinking of getting a HOTAS setup. I'm managing alright with mouse/keyboard but I keep getting the feeling that a stick would be much more fun. Slowly working my rank up. Just got to Mostly Harmless. Haven't ventured in the Open Play, I'm a bit of a hermit...

I'd say getting a HOTAS for Elite: Dangerous is vital - have been using the Saitek X-55 Rhino since day-one: http://www.saitek.com/x55/

I tried both docking with the keyboard and mouse, as well as planetary landing - the end result was a bit messy...

I've managed docking and landing with a keyboard, it's tricky but doable. Combat on the other hand....

Bought an Eagle. Going to a system's nav beacon is a decent way to find bounties quickly and make some money. I really need a gimbled weapon. I can't hit squat with the fixed lasers.

I found on the Eagle the gimbaled pulse beam acted like a fixed, rather frustrating.
Now I run a Viper MKIV with 2 turreted pulse beams and 2 gimbaled pulse beams. Problem is the gimbaled run like fixed guns here as well. Maybe it's something to do with the pulse weapons. Didn't stop me from blasting an Anaconda to bits yesterday though. There was a nice 120'000c bounty collected afterwards .

For the HOTAS users, if you want to take it up another notch, get TrackIR or another head/eye tracking solution. You'll wonder how you ever flew without it.

I agree, but don't buy track ir, make one for 1/10th the cost.

I'm currently using Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog, but I can't get over warthog's plastic mess of a gimbal. The absolutely cheap toggle switches really are terrible as well. I'm thinking of getting VKB gimbal with attachment for the warthog stick.I'm also gonna mod the throttle and replace the switches with something like otto or honeywell. They are pricey, but can be obtained for a reasonable price on ebay, worth the cost in my opinion. Other then that the stick feels solid.

Perhaps we should create private group and go bounty hunting or do community goals

I doubt there would be enough to make a group, but I'd join an F3D group.

Not sure what good it would do right now, I'm a few trillion miles from nowhere and headed in the opposite direction. At the rate I'm going, I might not make it back before the next expac drops.

Picked up a cut-price Turtle Beach headset from Currys a couple of days ago, and downloaded VoiceAttack for use with Elite - took a bit of time to get it to play ball with my HOTAS, but it's working smoothly.

If you get a chance to try it out, it's pretty amazing. Got the Brian Blessed voice pack for this, and he's awesome!

Next step: Oculus Rift...

I think a few of us have caught the bug. I'm in a fast cobra at Robigo at the moment. Python docked at Jameson Memorial.

I joined the PBSF (Pixel Bandits Security Force) a gaming clan mostly based on the Xbox. We're a friendly bunch based out of Ising Vision in Neto.

I guess i am kind of late on this thread but i bought myself the game a few days ago.
Its fun but i am kind of struggling with the new NPC AI they released. Those NPC's are deadly and destroyed my starter ship within a few seconds.
Interdictions are happening way too often even when i dont have any cargo the NPC's demand cargo and attack immediately.

It's apparently a bug - since the update, I've been unable to destroy a single ship, and I've got a decent Python with strong shields. The last encounter was against an Asp, and I received nearly 80% hull damage, and only just made up back to a station to repair!

Not really connected but I lost my python while taking on a cutter yesterday. The wife left me alone for an hour then right at the crucial moment of combat, talked to me about the cutlery drawer. 3.8 million down. I might as well not have bothered

I need to look up a better combat fit for my python as well. Was taking too long.

The AI should be much improved now, but as a general rule:

Submit to the interdiction rather than fight it, this gives your frame shift drive a much shorter cooldown period
Boost as soon as you get pulled out, all pips to engines.
If you have it, chaff when they fire lasers.
When your FSD is ready, jump away.

If you just got the game I guess you're in the starter sidewinder or other smaller ship. If you can, get to a low res in a ring system somewhere and stalk a bigger ship being taken out. When it's down to close to 1%, steal the kill from the NPC's. Repeat a few times and then go and cash in the bounties. Buy a cobra or viper and begin outfitting, then repeat. When you have a bit of cash you can decide to go hauling or exploring.

And, if you're in open, wing up.

Thx Harbinger and Crook.
I already got myself a Cobra MKIII and i am doing those deliver x,y missions for credits right now.
At the moment i am uncertain if i should enter any combat because of my equipment.
I bought two multi cannons and two railguns but was that a good choice?

Combat with any loadout is fine, but pick targets like yourself or smaller (cobra, eagle, sidewinder, viper) and avoid deadly or higher rank. Get a kill warrant scanner if you like and scan all wanted targets before engaging to maximise profits.

Be prepared to run, and stalk bigger ships for steal kills if the local authorities are killing them. If you accidentally hit a ship and become wanted, run immediately. Cash in bounties often and along with the money, upgrade. Always leave enough money for a minimum of 2 rebuys, but moving along probably a lot more. My rebuy is only 4 million but I've got 40 million in the bank which I'm uncomfortable dipping into.

Oh, and when you build up a pot of cash, it's a good idea to not trade in your old ship. Just buy a new one and store the old one. It's secondary insurance. If it all goes wrong, at least you'll have your old ship around. Only sell if you absolutely need the cash.

At the moment if you want to be a combat pilot, you want to get to a vulture. 10 million is ok to get started, 20 million will do fine, 30 million will deck it out nicely:

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60N,4z...Sk0722UI4wE7c6

The vulture is a beast, and cheap.
