Default The Orville

I watched the new series on Fox, The Orville. I knew it was a comedy so I wasn't expecting much but I was at least expecting something funny. It was boring. The only thing good about the show was the special f/x, it was pretty good, the f/x looked like something from Star Trek (since it's a direct spoof I can see why) the ship looked like a cross between the Enterprise E and The Andromeda. They even had TNG style warp stars. I just don't see this show lasting very long, it has to cost a lot of money to produce and it's basically a live action version of Family Guy except not as funny. I give it a couple of week before Fox pulls the plug. Maybe they should put it on Fox streaming service and charge for it like Star Trek Discovery.

I agree, the pilot episode was a mess. The second episode was marginally better, but I think it shows promise. Remember that the pilot episode of TNG was not great, and most of the first two seasons were below par (with the exception of the excellent Measure of a Man). So, I'd rather give Seth MacFarlane a chance, and hopefully it'll find its feet and improves.

It's a really strange show. It's not funny, but I don't think its trying that hard to be funny, its like MacFarlane is earnestly trying to make a show that gets the early 90's TNG nostalgia and Fox have asked him to put jokes in because he's known for comedy.

So it's too earnest to work as a comedy and the unfunny humour is too peurile to work as a drama so it ends up as neither. The show also looks horribly cheap, which I'm sure it wasn't. I'd question where the set build and FX money went because it's not on screen.

I didn't laugh once while watching the first episode. I don't think that I will watch another one. As a comedy it failed and as a Sci-fi it is too generic.

The Wife and I have enjoyed it so far. Does some of the comedy fall flat, yes, but that's not a reason for me to hate on it like some other reviews I've read. I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll be doing throughout the series and if Fox will continue it.

It's not a comedy, but there are some good jokes in it. It's a great homage to TNG. Episode 2 is bang on the nose, from fading in to the ship warping along, to the episode title fading in and out. It's got that 90's trek feel to it, the camera work, lighting, all of it.

I don't quite get the direction - not a comedy, not a drama, but all in all I think it's great. I think it could be easily tweaked to be a full on sci-fi light drama like TNG.

The latest episode follows on some deep themes about same sex relationships, marital difficulties, command pressures and so on. I don't feel that the characters are false or forced, and EP 2 certainly has a great sci-fi premise to back it up.

It's a weird mash of genres at the moment - maybe in the future (if not cancelled), the drama or the comedy will come out more. I wouldn't mind either taking over, or continuing this path.

I think ST disco has a problem airing at the same time as this series, especially if there are any coincidental storylines / situations.

They are trying to hard to be funny, when it is inappropriate. needs to be mostly drama with touches of humor. YMMV.

I've watched it and am recording it. Going to stick with it for a while. Not quite sure what I think of it yet. The last episode reminded me of TOS "Menagerie". I found it entertaining and they are at least trying to develop some characters. But the verdict is still out for me.

I absolutely adore it so far. Especially the third episode has just been an absolute home run IMO.

And yeah, it definitely feels like I'm back in the 90s every time I watch it. But in the best way possible.

Just finished watching episode three, About a Girl... There's a definite improvement.

OK, some of humour appears to be tacked on in places, but I'm slowly beginning to enjoy it.

Will definitely continue to watch more episodes.

I thought that was a good episode but I still can't understand if this show is a comedy or drama?

I think it's both.
Most, but all of the comedy, is stuff that people in star trek would have said if they didn't have sticks up their butts.
I think the show is exactly what it said it was going to be.

Yeah, it is in serious danger of falling into the gap between SF and Comedy.

Having said that, I rather enjoyed the third one, where they managed to make the jokes fit the plot, and there were a couple of decent SF surprises in there. I'm hoping it will continue to get better,

Way too much of the SF is Trek Next generation pastiche though. And I am utterly bored by pointless glowing blue strips all over spaceships.

I'd suggest it needs to get a bit more knowingly mocking, Futurama style.

I've been quite enjoying it. I think it out Star Treks Star Trek Discovery.

Oh dear.

That latest episode was about the laziest, most derivative SF I have ever seen on television.

Captain, this planet bears an almost uncanny resemblance to 21 century Earth.
Oh great, that will save us 95% of the effects budeget.

Giving up on this one.

That latest one wasn't just trying to copy TNG, but also black mirror now too? It's so hard to get a handle on this series, it's all over the place tonally.

Still loving the retro TNG vibes. And it got renewed for Season 2!

Enjoyed every episode so far. Characters are getting some decent development, setups are very trek like, but with some added edges from time to time. Plenty of room to expand it, this show is right on track.

There have been some bits I really enjoyed - ntaby the rare occasions when they do good SF gags, backed up by special effects - such as the "practical joke" of amputating a leg, followed up by a CGI baby leg. But way too often the jokes are just generic sitcom jokes.

It needs to develop the SF awareness of Red Dwarf or Futurama. If it starts to do this, backed up by the best ever FX in a SF comedy, it can be great. Bortus is an SF character who gets SF gags, and I like that generally...
