Default Space - Robert Goddard's movable casing rocket

Robert Goddard's "Movable Casing Rocket" from 1937. The lowest section moves up to 2 degrees to steer it - vectorable thrust.

I was surpised to hear some people like my bits of historical background, so here goes!

In my view, the field of the development of rocketry is dominated by four giant figures.

1. The Russian theoretician Tsiolkovsky. Born in 1857, he worked out many key principles, including the speed required for orbit, propulsion by liquid hydrogen fuel, and many, many more. Way ahead of his time.

2. The American Robert Goddard, who built the first flying liquid fueled rockets. Due to ridicule in the press, he became very private, and many of his greatest achievements were only recognised after his death. Some of his work independently reinvented Tsiolkovsky's work, which was unknown in the west.

3. Wernher von Braun. Inventor of the V2, the ancestor of almost all national rocket programs, including the Soviet, British, French and US programs. A weapon that was rapidly converted to research after WW2. Or as some put it "He aimed for the stars, and hit London" Also masterminded the Apollo Saturn V.

4. Sergei Korolev. The Soviet Chief Designer, who masterminded every major Soviet space first, including first satellite, first man in space, first woman in space, first docking in space, first photos of the lunar far side, and many more.
