Default F3D Contest Entry - Super StarFury

Hi folks, I was working on this over at Scifi-Meshes and someone mentioned the summer contest to update or redesign B5 stuff over here. What a coincidence! Now I have a great reason to finish this ship. I'm new to Foundation 3d, but I'm happy to quit lurking and start posting!

I based the Super Star Fury initially on Steve Burg's concept art, then it started taking on a life of it's own.

I've also created an original Starfury (I used Mark Kane's as a reference, but built my own mesh from scratch), and updated and changed a few things about the original ship, too. For instance, they never seemed to use the upper cannons in the show, so I converted them into a pair of optical tracking turrets. Seemed to make sense at the time

I tried to make everything fit as though it's an actual engineered component, with appropriate braces and joins where necessary; no "phasing" in and out of various pieces!

I've also tried to use up a lot of available hollow space inside the wings and armor plating of the original design. I've never known an engineer who wouldn't cram an aeroshell to it's gills with electronic gizmos, fuel tanks and other trash, and I'm sure the Starfury is no different!

Really looking forward to texturing these beasts, thanks for having me!

Cheers,

-Klavs

Fat-Fury

Looks great! I'm not sure about the new cockpit, but I like everything else.

Awesome looking beast there. I like the concept. I think it needs a name other than Super StarFury though, akin to Starfury, Thunderbolt, Badger............?

Welcome to F3d, and a truly impressive piece of work!

If you are looking for new names, I think "Starbolt" could work?

Thanks guys! I've taken to calling it the "Burg-Fury" after Steve Burg who did the initial sketch for the show back in the day. I'm glad the show went with the version they did, the giant cockpit glass looks like it's just waiting to get cracked, unless it was grown on Minbar or something.

It was either that or call it the "Steve-Fury", which is just too weird for me

How about calling it the Burg-er King?

I'll go with a sensible 'NovaFury', with a nickname of 'Shark' because of the cockpit shape. (once you see it you won't be able to unsee it )

Default Wow!

That's definitely interesting to see! It's kind of a blend between the final ship and that drawing.

The unused concept was definitely more extreme - but not as extreme as some of the other initial sketches (which unfortunately I couldn't locate).

I guess it depends on ones' tolerance for the unusual - I tend to try and push things outside the "comfort zone", and they're usually pushed back in the end

Nice work!

Thanks for the very kind words Steve, watching B5 on TV in the 90’s is what really inspired me to start playing with 3D. The Starfury was the first thing I ever tried to build in (in Swivel 3D, of all things, and it wasn't pretty ) and I’ve been amazed by them ever since. When I saw your concept art the bug hit me all over again, and I hope I’m doing her justice. Thanks for all the years of inspiration!

It’s too bad you haven’t found more of your concept art, I’d pay big bucks to have a coffee table book of your stuff!

Cheers,

-Adam

Spent some of the weekend building a cockpit for the classic Starfury, and refining the missile racks on the new one. Once I get the pilot built for the classic Fury I'll plonk him into the new one and start building acceleration couches and holo displays around him.

Also UV unwrapped the classic Fury, which was time consuming as all get out. time to start texturing!

Thanks guys! Re-working some details in the cockpit, and started the pilot. I'm actually pretty happy with him, considering he's my first human figure ever! I guess the pressure suit helps to conceal all the flaws in his biology.

For a first shot at a human thats ****ing awesome!

The face isn't great, but there's a rather fine astronaut head in resources, I think I recall...

@Escelce, it's your own fault! Your Fury partially inspired me to build my own!

And thanks everyone else for the great compliments!

Update on the pilot. He's not totally suitable (heh) for super-closeups, but he looks pretty good for medium-close and distance shots. The bump map is a little heavy to provide visible detail at those ranges. He's not 100% accurate to the show, but I'm pretty happy with him so far. Added some pockets here and there, among other things, and reworked some of the patches from the show.

Cockpit's still coming along, but I may have to switch to exterior detailing soon, I'm kind of getting burnt out on the 'pit.

Looks pretty awesome in general, only conern for me would be that there are some teeny weeny details that require rendering closer than larger areas of surrounding geometry can be comfortable rendered at without showing segmentation. Not that it hurts, just you'd never get to see them if the model doesn't hold up that close.

But over all very nice, and the fat fury looked great too!

Cheers!

Got the Super Starfury cockpit all modeled up (it's not as extensive as the other one) and the Ambient Occlusion map with some basic colors baked into the texture. I'll usually do this as a base coat on the weathering map to give things a bit more depth and dirt.

Now for some panel lines and a million other things and we'll be done in no time!

Oh, and one more shot of the pilot in the classic cockpit for now, because I like looking at him!

Love it!, even the fatfury nice piece of design job on the fatty, great level of consistent details without going fullretard on microdetails. looking forward to see these two babies being textured.

cheers!
