Just taking a break from 3d exp as I had not taken the tablet out since late june. . . just messing about with refining some characters. Debate is if I will follow through with the story for these. heh.


I know the story idea would be not everyones cup.
Here is a old drawing, really the first attempts at them. Likely i posted it but I broke a lot of images recently in a sad attempt to try to organize things on the blog,

all it did was change the link names and still leave them as a huge amalgamation of EVERYTHING. sigh oh well.

Heh, those were the first passes at drawing them. . . The colour center is the first drawing sorta to define a feel for them all. I added that pink haired girl as I started outlining things I needed one more. I am atm attempting to de-generic the boys and deal with the dark hair girl. The protagonist keeps changing from moment to moment for unknown reasons.

I am using a new tool to do things too so the overall line work is vastly different than when I was doing stuff in SAI. Clip Studio is giving me more PS like pencil lines than the more paint brush stuff of SAI. I am also mulling out a style for this work as I have not been too happy with the look of my work lately. though not much of it is in evidence here atm.

rearranged and added colour to the one character. Probably should have spent the time on refining the characters or doing something else.


I probably should work up each on in their own canvas. I think the one boy is where I want him least in his head and hair. Clothing I dunno. I am still unsure about the dark haired girl and the lighter haired boy. I might mix up the colours too just avoiding the odd colours on most of them. Well that one has that washed out pink dye thing that seems popular lately but eh she is different in other regards so >_> Protagonist is different on purpose and should be explained whenever I get to posting the story.

I am trying to avoid that weeb western look to them. least I hope to not fall into that trap.

just messing around with boy 1. (the lighter haired one) I have no real req for this one. Just think what I had was not key enough to hold design wise as one of the primary leads. Least for the first arc. I do want him to be the son of some shop owner near the protagonists location. (interaction) I am having to play around with things to get interaction as I refuse to play the SCHOOL card that is way too common, or the work colleagues card.

I did some other line drawings and hated them as well so I just put some bleh colour onto the one image. I might change the hair colour, dunno.



I dumped that far right look as too weeb, IE too ameriburger looking.

got sick of drawing guys, instead it's little girls.(well that IS up to interpretation) ffff well new touhou is due out after my bday and well it is a comfy place IE, lazy thought, I do not have to think too much just scribble. I dunno if this is going to go anywhere further either.

Image is reimu and marisa in the updated costumes for the new game. Zun (creator) often changes up the costumes for each game. heck this time Reimu has 2 outfits. I doubt this is on purpose, likely just forgetfulness but I sort of mixed the parts I liked. It is also common to interpret the outfits your way in the fanart. The images are kinda ambiguous with reimu as her hair could be short or seen as tied back I erred on the latter.

Bit large as I wanted the brush work to show. Or should that be the mess? heh. I have been trying hard to avoid that work like a mech pencil on the pc as it lends to meh work in my opinion.


and for those who have not picked up on it I do work on a tinted BG to save my crap eyes. That white BG just rips them up.

this app takes forever to paint with loads of "fixing" it seems. Hopefully it is more of a get used to thing than anything else.

Tossed some fast colour under the other doodles. I need to figure out a way to consistently do that pink hair effect or come up with one that works easily in this tool vs SAI.


Seems I have been working more with getting used to or setting up this app vs any real work on this stuff. heh. Slowly getting there with the looks but the feel is still not the same as SAI. Maybe it is just pointless to fight to retain a look across apps? That or I am just being a old man and not learning something new. HAH. ugh pffffft oh well.

Eh not much new but I couldn't leave the others rough so I did a few hours work painting the merged up layers. I often do this now paint on top of the sketch so it is mostly a singular layer. I think it gives a better feel. I had done it to speed things up originally and it probably does as doing each colour or section as a mess of layers gets tedious and makes you too fiddly and worry some about stupid details that do not matter exp if you resize to the intended viewing size.




Speaking of size this is a crop at 1:1 this new app pre determines my canvas sorta so I have dropped pizel rez some but it is close to what I normally use IE the short axis is often 4000pixels. Mostly that just in case I want to print it out in a high rez dye sub or whatever. Mostly due to the EFX as they look better scaled down than at viewing rez. That and it is far easier to paint the details with MORE pixels than less. Either way all prefs as I know some who work at rez and others who work at 12K+ For me however a 4770k cpu cant manage that with this application as complex brushes start barfing at 150pixels. Likely it is BAD code in the app and not the hdw. EXP considering I have been having some real issues of no paint strokes where Ill start working paint and it just wont put anything down. Ill have to lift and start over. Doesn't sound like a HUGE issue until it pulls this on you and it really REALLY kills the flow and rythem.


I have also noticed the additive efx in this tool are not TRUE, screen additive dodge etc all still will darken values. Note the shadows around the characters. So it is not really a expected PS replacement i will likely still have to rely on ps if I want to do post glows and stuff like that. Here it is fine as I really do not care about the results as the surrounding shadow helps them pop against the plain BG. but in a proper comp it will be a no no, a big no no. heh.

Guess I will put this idea on hold for a bit and go muck with something else for a while. I am having trouble coming up with ideas for casual clothing that does not look like western weeb art. (sorry if the term is wrong or unknown, I cannot really put into words the look I am trying like mad to avoid) But it is a fine line as I do not want to rely on uniforms (I have decixded to avoid the overused school setting crap to create interaction scenarios) nor do I want to go with way out there costume like stuff. (heh those 2 dresses are not casual stuff heh,) but I DO want to avoid the whole jeans and t shirt shit. I really hate seeing that.

And yes the 2 light haired girls are the same one. This was intended as a character sheet for her. It in the end ended up being something else.

Not got any lighting plans for this one so I am sort of winging it. Original idea was to have a contrasty image with low ambient but eh. I think I need to start looking outside of illustration for a while and go wild with some non controlled work.

I remember why I quit drawing this character. The annoying tails and hat. She is a kyuubi a 9 tail fox in lore I think it is 100years per tail and god level abilities etc. The Yokai feature in a lot of media. One most casuals would know of is likely Naruto.

The girl is a nekomata a split tail cat. Generally a vengeful spirit of a cat that lives a period of time. They often eat their owners upon becoming a yokai. (most anything yokai ends up eating people heh)
