How on earth did you get a hold of my monster-in-laws picture from our wedding?!?!? I will say though that you made her look much better than in real life.

Apart from the my fan story Exeter animatics, I haven't really done any serious drawing since 1989 after I took animation classes. I wanted to go to Japan to be an animator but finances didn't work out. Instead I help found a local Japanese animation club in 1986 as a means to get material to study various artists and styles. My focus was training to adapt to "on model" to each of the individual artists and show style working from model packs witohut any fallout from any previous styles I was transitioning back and forth on. Even had a couple of friends who went to Japan, but they came back wierd after working personally with a few of the big name artists and studios in Japan, Tailand and China. After that sacking and stocking groceries didn't seem so bad in contrast. I pretty much gave up in 1993 on wanting to go to Japan to be an animator. As for pencil drawings since then.... I have some old samples I've hung onto over the years...

This was a rough for a animation cell that never got around to finishing in 1987. It is a ship from the 3rd season of Space Cruiser Yamato in 1981 in Kazuhiko Udagawa's mechanincal style from the show.

This was a action pose pencil for a poster for Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam that I scrapped halfway to completion in 1990. Bad Layout...but thought the individual element built for paste in for pre-clean up of Judo Ahshta looked neat. This was Hiroyuki Kitazume's style from the TV series model packs. ( style gussied up by me of course...)

This was done on commission on request for a floor company that did the floors at the local Wal Mart back in 1993. I still have a couple of the shirts to this day. They shafted me but I kept the art. HaHa. This is in Akemi Takada's style.

I'll see if I can scrounge up some more. I'm rusty but might doodle again outside of the recent stuff I've been doing for my stories.....

Here's an old character design I piddled with. Liked the look. What I didn't like was being rusty after not drawing for several years unwelcomed having Haruhiko Mikimoto's style contaiminating the look. Kind of a mutant disney / Macross style. Over time old styles I studied pop up when I don't want them too when I do decide to draw. They frequently showed up like an uninvited guest for dinner.

The second is a self-portait of myself in 1987 for a local anime club newsletter adiscussing not abusing other people's stuff / loanouts.

And the 3rd one is a more serious version for a fanzine article in 1990 about the negatviity of fan-politics.

I envy your vision of fantasy. I tried my hand at fantasy illustrations and didn't fare so well. My head was more into science fiction ad not fantasy, and thus I wasn't able to imagine up enough vision to express it artistically. Well...not enough to make it intersting looking like yours. What you have here is definately magazine quality to be proud of.

Here is a quick concept painting I wipped out a while back for an alien species for my Project Cosmos. I think he'd make a cuddly friend.

Let's try this again.....

The first one was a mood study in expression in Akemi Takada's animation TV series style from her Magical Girl series style from the mid 1980s. I never studied butterflies so I shelved this one and forgot it. This piece I think dates around 1996. This was a quick rough as practice to keep from getting rusty. Emphasis as usual is being on model to her style.

Name:	butterfly.jpg
Views:	312
Size:	64.4 KB
ID:	17897

The next one is a rough for a display cell I was working on in 1992 of Lum from Urusei Yatsura. I never got to see her shopping for shoes. And we always know that women are always on the lookout for a bargain. Basically another expression study focusing on quick roughing and articulation of form. Again emphais on being "on model" to the character and to the style of the model packs later seen in 4th season in the series as done by Studio Dean.

Name:	lum.jpg
Views:	312
Size:	69.5 KB
ID:	17898

The 3rd one is a experiment I was doing with Akemi Takada's style in trying to load it up in detail as I felt I could get away with. I was never really one to do nudes cringing at what other might think, and hence why some of the detail in this piece is deliberately incomplete. But was feeling pressed to confront some reather glaring form and structure issues in my human forms in theiir muscle stucture and outline. I was mainly curious to see if her simple style still looks good if you load it up in detail since I have always been a detail freak. Although I felt this piece looked good as a "looksee", I consider it a failure since it basically points to that her style becomes more grotesque and cluttered when you cram more detail into it. She normally is minimalistic, and will use watercolor to "detail" out her finishing in her artwork. This is the elegance of her style...minimal linework and it's beauty in it's simplicity. ( This is Akemi Takada's tv sereis interpritation of Izumi Matsumoto's manga series of Madoka from Orange Road 1987 TV series. That is.... before Akemi Takada mutated her art style after 1988 when she began doing the character designs for the Patlabor Video sereis where she radically changed how she did her eyes which I hated. I thought her earlier work was more pretty in how she did her eyes...more soft and graceful...) . I was also trying to improve my wrists and forearms in this shot since this was a recurring problem that I was having at that time since I had not yet gotten reference matierial on Burne Hogarth's art series on the human body. His study guide books to me were intimidating, and scared me in that it looked like so much work to make everything look real and convincing. I wanted everything to be easy and was trying to cut corners as much as possible in every piece of illustration..and much to my dismay at times....it showed VERY BADLY.....
This piece dates from mid 1994 just to see how rusty I had become from not drawing after several years. Okay...but nothing to clinche a job interview with. Again emphaiss on being "on model" to her style and overall approach to her treatment of characters from the series. Blew it with the extra detail.....not how she would have presented her characters prior to 1988....

First is an old illustration for a local gaming club newseltter for a Star Fleet Battles article back in 1994.

The second one is the other major part of the ZZ Gundam poster I scrapped back in 1990. this piece was slotted for the top right of the poster and the one of Judo in the action pose reaching for his beam sabre was slotted for the bottom left of the poster. ( was to be mirrored by his mobile suit mirroring his actions behind him...near center of the poster...) This character is the chief villian Haman Khan who was AUEG and Judo's chief nemesis in the series. In the forground of this shot you can see the light rough of her mobile suit ( Quebley...) in attack against Judo's suit which at the moment has it's back to her. ( Kind of a character statement for her part of stabbing people in the back. But our hero Judo unbeknownst to her Hero has one up on her....) The poster was to be a Landscape layout ( horizontal ) and not portrait layout. ( vertical )

The 3rd one is a comedy illo spoofing martial arts shows. This was to be a character design concept as a farce / parody idea for a show.....

The 4th one is a frame from a unused animation sequence for a old friend's animated short. This is a surprise take....

The 5th one is a manga style illustration of the character Akane from Rumiko Takahashio's comic Ranma 1/2. This piece dates from 1990 and was one of my early attempts to cram as much detail into a manga illustration for a fanzine / APA black and white. Kind of a attmept to push the limits of a black and white comic illustration intended for photocopy reproduction loaded with as much detail as I thought I could get away with. Another "looksee" experiement for my curiousity....

The 6th one is a pencil detail for a display cell I did for a lady friend on request back in the summer of 1989. The cell got damaged when I finished it....due to a Step-brother brushing it off the table so he could put his RC car on the table and then parked his bycycle kickstand right in the middle of the cell. I was ready to kill, and my dad had a hard time understandingwhy I was ready to physically kick butt over a damaged piece of acetate. He had no clue how much work I had put into it. Had to repaint it all over again so the lady friend could get he piece of art she wanted.

The last one is again the one I first posted of Judo Ashta from the ZZ Gundam poster I scrapped. This was slotted for the bottom left of the poster with His mobile Suit ( Double Zeta Gundam...) reaching up for the beam sabre to draw it out of the suit's backpack. The ZZG would have been center in the poster behind Judo. I'm reposting this with the Haman Khan pencil since they were both part of the same poster that was being built. I'm reposting this with the Haman illo, so to give both elements to gather a feel for the layout of the poster. ( Judo bottom left...Haman top right..Double Zeta center....Quebley top right center beneath Haman.....) The poster was to be a Landscape layout ( horizontal ) and not portrait layout. ( vertical ) All the other characters and their suits were to ring the border of the poster watching both as if they were spectators in the fight. I still think it owuld have been a killer poster. but the rescources avasialbe to me at that time and budget were the hinderance that broke me of finishing it. Well the layout was too demanding small illustration and reducing it in sizer would have killed much of the detail when it was reproduced. Who knows...technology has progressed enough that I probably build and finish it digitally since I won't have to pay for physical reproductions which were cost prohibitive for my budget at that time. Hummm....

Thanks for fixing the images Woody. Wasn't sure if I needed to send a reply thanking you in private since you did me a favor..

Yang Man as an idea when I did it in 1993 was my way of showing my disdain for martial arts shows, since such shows are often over the top and a farce in of themselves. Growing up I had a hard time trying to see what people saw in such films, and wondered if they were really meant for comedies given how cheezy they have been. I am sure there are some serious ones that are good.....I just haven't seen them. And I felt like running for the hills when I showed it to the guy who "inspired" me concerning such films. You could tell he was trying to play it cool, but it did bug him. I guess I hit a nerve. Odd enough I've noticed some of the strongest satire against a genre usually winds up being the cult classic later on for that Genre. Those who mock wind up being honored by those they were mocking placing them dead center of those they were heaping scorn on. Funny...you're now the one others are making fun of when you were making fun of others. Poetic irony?

What's funny in that I chose the name "Taco" for the side kick because in Japanese it means "Octopus" an connotates a mad flurry of arms attacking relentlessly. And with the priest being the opposite being a no nothing let the boss do the fighting slacker, the name seemd like a blantant inverse pun. Like having a wimpy character and naming him "Macho". Taco's role is whenever Lethal Yang becomes weary beconing for assistance, Taco usuially sitting on the sidelines raises his shinto staff and shakes / rattles it at Yang a couple of times and half hearteedly and ambivalently mutters...."Go get em." And then Yang feeling supercharged with emotional support is wound up into a enthusiastic frenzy whirlwind, and in lighting speed kicks everyone's butt to the Nth degree brutally. And despite this Yang loves Taco's companionship due to his "emotional support. " But Yang never totally realizes that Taco is a worthless slacker...mainly due to Yang is too busy kicking everyone's butt to notice. And besides Yang likes having all the opposition to himself and enjoys doing it all himself. And I guess again that is another bad parody of relationships in teamwork. The Hero always needs his "friends". ( Smack....ouch...)

Sic....

Thanks Woody...but I have bigger things on my plate to focus on than Yang and Taco. You're free to do them and have my blessing. I'm pretty open with my stuff. I jsut ask that you give me credit since they are my characters. Credit for the animation if it is done is all yours. And it would be a kick to see someone else do something with it.

My main focus is chilling for a bit and deciding where I want th begin in learning CGI. My main desire is to learn to use existing models for my mini-sereis animatics. After thanksgiving I hope to be free to do some more and have them posted. I've been even toying with picking up a pencil and doodling again just out of curiousity. We'll see how the holiday pans out first. ( relatives...go figure.....)
