Default LightWave - Animated deformations of a cylinder

I'm trying to develop an effect that will be easier if done in-camera. I have a cylinder and the goal is to radially stretch (expand) the cylinder near one end and then animate that deformation along the length of the cylinder (like a traveling wave).

Lightwave has several deformation options, but my early exploration into those options produces nothing. This made me wonder if these built-in effects only work on points. The cylinder doesn't have any points along its length. Am I not understanding how these effects work, or do I need to explore a completely different method?

Displacements and Deformations need points (vertexes) to work - the more the better --depending on the application.

Since you want to performing multiple operations on the cylinder, you'll need to subdivide it further to create your effect.

The LW documentation goes into extensive detail regarding both methods of deforming a mesh.

Thank you, ccclarke. Subdivisions and more points makes sense..
