Default Abstract - Lightwave 2018 Experiments

I am starting this thread so we can share our results with Lightwave 2018. It doesn't matter if you have the trial version or you've actually upgraded.

Post your images and animations here, successful or not-so-successful. Share your discoveries, your tips and tricks.

Default First Render

I loaded the model I built of the Raven's Claw (from the Jedi Knight games) and an old model of a landing field (I made this back in version 5!).

The only surface I have updated so far was the cockpit glass; I used the Diamond Glass preset, which is a dielectic surface. It works very well and makes nice looking windows.

The samples were min 4 max 12.

G.I. was Monte Carlo, interpolated with the default settings.

It took about 5 minutes to render.

Note: this is running LW on a late 2013 iMac, with a 2.7 GHz i4, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with the Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics system.

Good idea for a thread.

The new shaders are great so far. Finally got this thing looking like the jade I always pictured, that never could quite get right with the old subsurface shaders. Both of these actually use the standard Principled BSDF shader, which will probably be my go-to from now on. Looking through the other shader presets like Conductor and Dielectric, they're basically just excerpts of the full BSDF shader, with only the "applicable" settings on them. Anything you can do in those can be done in the regular BSDF if you fiddle with the right settings.

As far as Tips and Tricks, you can use the Ray Distance input to add a custom gradient to the Transmittance Distance slider on the Transparency/Dielectric settings. That's how I got the center of the glass dragon so dark while leaving the limbs almost completely transparent... just using a fixed value for Transmittance Distance couldn't do that.

Default Just Mucking around with 2018

Just trying out the new stuff using a couple scenes that i was tinkering with..

Fast renders.. switching all over to the default shading Material, Principled BDSF, then i find a convert to that's even cooler.

Default 808 Bluetooth speaker

Old 808 Bluetooth speaker I did in 11.6. Made a few changes in LW 2018 and you have this 4.38 hours later.

And now you get to watch the renderer play Tetris...
