Has it been established yet what those "lights" are that illuminate the ship name and registry on the upper primary hull? Are they lights, or spillover from observation windows?

You know, I hadn't thought of the observation window theory, but that would make sense. I'd like to think they didn't waste that much space in the hull just to cut out spot lights.
Unfortunately, I suspect it's just another "well, it looks great on tv" thing rather than any real-world logic behind it. I try not to make sense of Treks anymore, much as I love them, so many things and designs seem to be a purely artistic choice rather than a functional/realistic one - and that's fine too. As much as I like this Enterprise, it's completely out of sync with all the other ships of this show - which are also completely out of sync with previous Treks. *shrug*

John Eaves said they were light panels. They were intended to look more old-fashioned than the single big magic spotlight on other Prime ships.
