Coming on great still, love the detail on this, how many polys now then and how many do you imagine on completion Jim. As people have said when you go to this level of detail it really pays off eventually but yes sometimes its tedious. Just glad we have instances and such now.

Thanks guys!

The idea is to recreate an Apollo launch, just up to TLI, and hopefully get some shots not possible in real life, such as some interesting shots at stage separation.

Here's an initial test of the engine thrust simulation.

Some more updates!

S-IVB stage is nearly complete. Most of the doodads (i.e. telemetry, antennae, vents, umbilical panels, etc) are now in place. The thrust structure is pretty close to done, all the core parts are there, what remains is all the really fine grain detailing - not sure how crazy to get with that.

S-II is coming along, there's still some more bits to add, I think I'm missing some vent holes for the LOX tank, and the top of the LOX tank isn't finished. Redid the stringer geo to make it more accurate.
Also redesigned the layout of the fairings for the LH2 pipes so their proportions are more accurate.

Finally some more work on the S-IC stage. Redid the stringers, added more detailing like LOX vents, etc. Added the thrust posts and the outriggers for the F1 engine gimbals.

It would take me years to get to that level of detail, incredible work!

A nice reference I found is here
http://3d.si.edu/apollo11cm/index.php
They've scanned the Apollo 11 CM and have it as STL files, which makes a nice reference to use!

Question to anyone out there, the CM's rcs thrusters, the one I circled in red

They appear to be two tubes at 90 degree angles from each other? Is that correct?

Thanks guys, and Nick, I just went through your N1 threads, that's even more accurate than this, and you did it with less references I'm guessing! You're being too modest!

Those thrusters remind me of the torpedo tubes on the X-wing (or a WWII submarine for that matter).

It looks like the one on the right would jet out to the left and vice versa.

Yeah, I'm guessing the whole thing, for all the stages is going to be more than 3 of million, but, that's with all of the internal parts too, so you could turn those off. No matter what, I'll bet it's easily going to go over 2 million.

by the way, does anyone have any good references of the docking probe? I've found pictures that sort of help, but it's a complicated a mechanism, and something like a real ortho blueprint would really help.

Not much onthe docking probe, but if you are after the detail, there's loads in the attached doc - the Apollo Training Manual

OK, the dock probe isn't perfect, but it's close enough for gov't work. Add some bevels and smooth out some of the rough spots and I'll call this done. Also it might be a tad too big, so might have to fiddle with the scale a bit.

Hey it looks like he's fixed a bunch of links. I remember when I started his site was referenced by a bunch of people but most of the links were messed up. Nice to see some of these photos.

Further work on the CM. Nearly done here except for some bits of doodads and handles. Docking probe should now be about the right size give or take a bit.
