UV unwrapping is 95% complete. Whats left now:
Redo BPC
Add F1 engine batting
Mount up F1 engine to S-IC stage
Mount up J2 engines to S-II and S-IVB stages

Can't say more than others, this is an incredible piece of work. With all the parts this deserves a full launch animation

Thanks guys!
Here's an animation of the stack in it's current form (no CSM or engines yet).

Other than being a uniform grey, that certainly looks like the actual rocket! Very nice work.

Experiments with a set of engines (instead of just 1), working through some of the sim issues. This is just a set of screen grabs with a basic material.

That's not too shabby at all, at small size they look really good.

I think you are on the right track!

Houdini, so it get's pretty involved, pretty quickly. I'm using their pyro simulation setup, with each engine generating a set of particles that get's fed into the sim as a fuel and heat volume.

First test render with the texture maps applied. The first stage fwd skirt is not quite right so I'm going to have to play with that a bit, as is it is not aligned correctly.

Some more shots, including the full stack (CSM too), with some temp materials in modo to see how things look. Apologies for the large file sizes, I kind of got carried away!

Huzzah, engine mounting started! The F1's fit right in with little adjustment, need to add hols for tubing to go through the heat shield. J2s also fit pretty well, not sure about connecting them, that's going be some more adjustments to the fuel lines.

This is turning out beautifully!

I have very vivid childhood memories of watching these things lift off from Cape Canaveral. It was on a tiny Black and White TV my parents had. During the late 60's and early 70's I was obsessed with the Apollo missions.

Maybe one of you guys know this:
How was the J2 engine actually mounted to the SII stage? The F1 has arms that support gimbals/actuators to move the engine in one plane, and it's pretty straightforward to see how they were mounted. The J2, on the other hand, has so much piping/wires/tubes, etc at the mount point that I can't figure how the gimbals/actuators would attach?

The model looks fantastic.

In your engine sim images, there's one thing about the shape of the flames around the launch pad that bugs me. The way the fire is billowing looks like it's pretty slow and lazy. When I'm watching real rockets lift off, the flames are moving at very high speeds and tend to blast straight out of the exhaust vents. The smoke billows up all nice fluffy; again, at a fairly high speed.

So in your images, the billowing is something I expect to see as smoke. The flames I expect to see hitting the pad then spraying outwards, pretty much horizontal to the ground.

Just my two cents.

A really interesting article about the actuator/gimbal design, specifically for the J2-X, the follow up to the J2.

OK figured out the actuators (red shape), don't know how how super accurate the actual shape is, but it's close enough, and at least they are in the right place, so I can always switch them out for something more accurate later on.

Here's a link to the real thing:
http://www.spaceaholic.com/csimages/csj2pitch1.jpg

Turns out that unlike the F1, these guys are more compact and the mount points (the green shape) are located almost directly on the thrust chamber itself.
