Default Huge sky map texture

Sky maps based on the Tycho catalog:

http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a003500/a003572/

Stars at higher latitudes are stretched so they should map correctly when used as a spherical texture.

Highest resolution is 16k x 8k and an uncompressed 384 Mb TIFF is available, so decent broadband is a must!

I know the pros will have a fit, but given the very limited colour range used, I'd be tempted to reduce it to an 8 bit PNG for memory efficiency...

Nick

Wow, I am rather impressed with the results - A quick animation 1024x768, x5 AA, and it seems to work really well, with lots of faint stars.

A 24 bit PNG takes the file size way down, and it should be really easy to tune the sky, by simply adjusting the gamma correction and so forth...

If there's a mod on the thread - is it worth uploading an LW holding scene with a PNG version of the map? I think this could be seriously useful to a lot of users here.

And here's a higher definition version looking a different direction - this is seriously deep and shows clumpiness in the Milky way...
