Question Battle damage on a starship

I've been looking on how to do some battle damage onto a starship's hull, like these:

I've pretty much struck out on how to do damage like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Still thinking on this. Still not sure where to go with the type of damage I'd like to produce.

Long shots = texture maps. If you're getting anywhere close to the damage though, portions of it will need to be modeled in order to really sell it.
