Default August-September 2013 Texture Challenge!

Yes, its back after a long time away, and hopefully, depending on interest, the first of many to come.

In order to mix things up there will be two alternating types of challenge, in the first (like this one) there will be a model to download, and all you have to do is texture it yourself.

The second type, and the one we will run next time, is for you to create a texture you can share with the board, and show a WIP thread for how you make it.

Anyway, back to this challenge, you should see a zip file on this page containing an object file for this lego man.

Your challenge, should you chose to accept it, is to load this little fella into your 3D program of choice, and give it a new texture.

You may enter twice with different textures, but please remember this is a texture challenge only.

While you are free to alter the pose of the model, you should not do any additional modelling, and although you are free to light this model however you want, it is only on the texturing itself that members should vote for, when the time comes.

You do not have to start a WIP thread for your challenge, but the last RA contest received a lot more votes because most of the entries did just that, so your call there.

When you are ready to post your entry, please post a picture of your textured lego man, and also post your textures as separate images.

You have two months so good luck, and I look forward to seeing your work!

Way cool, hope to see this as popular as it once was. Thanks for bringing it back.

Are there rules that would prohibit, for example, it having been textured for octane? (Which i know a few folk around here are getting more into.

As long as you show your textures it dosnt matter which program you use to render it.

I am hoping I learn some new ideas too.

BTW, I noticed there is a small gap between head and torso, so feel free to move that down so it touches the body.

Indeed, let's get this going. It might take a little bit for everyone to realize it's back.

Not as part of the challenge, no extra modelling.

If you want to make something outside of the competition, extra modelling is fine.

I was thinking of Indiana Jones, but it wouldn't work without the hat.

I am pretty sure most of us would recognise Indy even without a hat, if you do a good job on the texturing, which I am sure you would.

But once we start adding pieces to the original model then it no longer becomes just about textures.

I might have to give this a try, I'm just now learning to texture. As soon as I finish my current scene I'll give this a try.

Crud, I didn't realize that there was a texturing contest going on... I don't know if I'll have time, but I'll see what I can do...

Remember everyone taking part should post their final entry in this thread.

There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner, and right now, anyone who takes part has a pretty good chance of finishing in one of those places.

You have to be in it to win it, and chances are if you are in it, you will win it.

Six days remaining.

Sorry, biotech. I wanted to try my hand at texturing, but I've been pulling 11-13 hour days at work for the last month or so, and just didn't have the energy to try to get into two competitions.

AUGH I totally forgot about this. We need a way to have these contests and challenges be more present in the forums. Maybe a small 200pixel banner in the header.

Lately for me it seems everything is on fast forward, in the past 2 months seemed like an eternity now it is like I have my morning coffee and 3 months have blown by! It does not help the forums (all over not just here) have a much higher lurk and leech membership than active members. I remember that carrier contest at SFM and how many people we had taking part. Times I wonder if all the 3d forums or other forums added together with just contributing members would barely fill a 15ft square room!

Anyhow please do not disregard contests or challenges in the future!

The idea of some kind of banner mentioning the challenges is a good one. Maybe we can put something into the image rotation at the top of the page.
