It's the same for UFO, futuristic when we first saw the episodes and now set firmly in the past. (UFO was set in 1980.) I guess the smart things is to set your space SF firmly in the distant future. (There was a project floating around for a while to remake Space 1999 but make it 2099 but I think it's not going to happen now.)
I'm not sure they could do it justice. Space 1999 came out at a time where shooting for a base on the moon didn't seem like something that was out of reach, and the tech was a nudge beyond 70's tech. No one could have foreseen how far computers and tech would evolve in the last 30 years. Main mission had a compute the size of a living room doing the work of a standard desktop pc of today. Also, with the moon it's more been there done that. To catch the imagination of the modern man you need to set your sights higher....ergo the target to get a manned mars mission.
