Default High-Quality Free Textures from Nvidia

This site was mentioned in the Digital Tutors Urban Environment creation tutorial and I just thought I'd share. Looks like some amazing textures.
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/IO_TTVol_01.html

Plugin needed to open them in Photoshop (they're .dds files):

Is there an app that will convert dds files in batch mode?

BTW - DDS Converter 2 does not run on Vista even in 'compatibility mode'.

Alas, one of the many things that don't work in Vista, hence why I stayed the hell away from that Operation Shutdown....

Building a new machine and you can count on it that Vista will not be running on it.

I'm using them in Maya. Not sure they work in Maya. I'll try again.

Edit: Yep, Maya uses 'em no prob. Yay!

Just curious, but what format did you convert them to? Photoshop only allows me to save them out as a PSD, TIFF, PBM, EXR, and one or two others. No jpgs.

That usually happens when they are 16+ bit images. If you want .jpg you may have to convert them to 8 bit

Default A few more texture sites

I found a few more texture sites, all free, with some interesting stuff. May or may not be quite as high-quality as the DDS files in the first post.

http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/packs/

http://www.textureking.com/

http://www.highresolutiontextures.com/

Please chime in if one site or another is better or worse. A couple of the sites may not allow you to download the entire collection at once. I think the second or third are pick and choose sites.

What do you mean, Genetica? No comprende . . .

Edit: Oh, okay, I see. Yeah, I guess they named their texture editor Genetica.

Yep. Its a lot of fun to play with.
I use it less now since most of the stuff that I do requires custom maps.

Now that DDS plugin looks ideal for me - I have been wanting to get at the super-huge planet textures on the Celestia Motherlode for ages!

I saved them out as .png. There's a plugin available for PS for importing dds files. If you save them to any other format - just reload the export and save out to jpg

I have converted the DDS files into bitmaps. I could zip them up and load them as a resource if anyone thought it would save them some time instead of having to use plug-ins. They'd be about 230ish MB in size compressed.

They are 694 MB uncompressed, but perfect quality and ready to be converted to whatever format anyone would prefer to use more readily than having them as DDS.

EDIT: Just realized it's Christmas day! Merry Christmas everyone!

I think IrfanView with plugins can batch convert from .dds.

I just used 'Right Click Image Converter' by Kristanix. It's a pretty sweet little program. Using an image and you realize you need a different format, just right click and convert it from the drop down menu to any of 12 different formats instantly!

Nifty little program. Get it if you can. Saves time from having to open a photo editor up just to convert an image. Or you can even do batch conversions. And it does .DDS conversion standard.
