A turn and tip animation - this could really use some higehr AA I think.

Very nice Nick I agree that it could use a "bit" more AA

I tried an HD animation with good AA and a fast frame rate... It predicted a render time of 3 weeks!

I did!

Let it run for a day, but it still looked a bit shimmery...

The nastiest part is the fine ridges around the rim - I think it may work better if I replace them with a normal map, or perhaps even a stripy pattern...

I imagine you're rendering in Vue if it's 3week prediction?

Nope, this was LW. (My last vue test took 4 hours for a still, I seriously think it would be 3 months minimum if I tried it in that! And that's before I add the trees...)

Default Beyond the realms of ancient light...

Here's one where I have tried to emphasize the fact that the telescope operates outside the range of human vision. Nicely framed (I hope!), with a quotation from a Hawkwind lyric which I thought was appropriate.

Maybe I should try a short animation in anaglyph 3d?

I'm never quite sure how these things work! I rendered at double the size here, and used a separation of 4.

So you're going to share this model right? Would love to do some renders of my own.

No.

I have offered use of it to Pernik, because I am a huge admirer of the work he does done here, but I will not be releasing it generally.

I'll gather up some struts into a nurnie pack, and also some of the large image maps, but to be brutally frank I've had stuff I've released downloaded hundreds of times without thanks or feedback on how it was used, so I'm a lot more selective these days...

Very, very nice. A beautiful modelling job.

I actually applied to work on the Byrd Greenbank Radio Telescope in Wisconsin you mentioned earlier in this thread but didn't get the job, too many union ironworker/welders posted ahead of me.

Kept my union card up to date and thought that job to be worth coming out of retirement for. The one type of structure i never worked on. Oh well missed opportunities.

All the main structural members are welded, only the bracing is bolted, tons of weld in that puppy, welders heaven.

My first finished Vue render. I'm still tweaking some bits and pieces, but I think this is good enough to count.

The ground texture images are also now in resources:

Two more Vue versions, this time from the rear.

Also been working on the night shots and spotlights, now with some falloff, and I'm happy enough with the results to consider these ones done.

Think I need to do some more on the shots without the big spotlights though.

I'm so glad you've finally done some renders out of LW. They look great.

I have never seen a render straight out of Vue that I like, it's just a nasty renderer.

Disappointing to hear you won't be putting this one in the resources too, I'm sure it'd get a lot of use.

Sore point! I got back today to find my 30 hour Vue render had finished, unfortunately between the test render and the full one it decided to regenerate the tree positions, and plonked one directly in front of the camera!
