Default Movie & TV Related - CSS Archer for Renegades: The Requiem

Hi everyone, sorry I've not posted in a really long time. Just wanted to share a couple of pictures of a ship I designed for Renegades. Tobias Richter did the detailing and renders.

Sakura-san! How to good to see you again!

Nice looking ship. And you're working with Tobias! He was one of the people who influenced me getting into this hobby.

CSS? Canadian Starship?

lol. No... Confederation Starship.

Its good to see everyone here. Since I've been gone I've been to my first shoot, met with and hung out with the cast and crew of Renegades, including Star Trek actors from all series so far. And I got to be an extra.Best of all, I took my son with me. so now he has credits with the art department and as an extra.

Welcome back Sakura!
Congrats for being part of that team. Hey, the ship looks interesting. Can we see other views, like underside, bays and defletor?

Earlier this month I was a celebrity assistant at the Forest City Comic Con. I spent the weekend with Aaron Eisenberg from DS9. What a wonderful human being!

It's nice to see a member of our community getting involved with projects like this.

It's good to have you back! Nice ship, are those flight pods under the nacelles? That would be like a combination of a Federation starship and a Battlestar, I like it.

I'm not normally much of a fan of Trek stuff, but these are great, particularly the first one!

How curious! You and me both, then. My style was definitely influenced by "The Light Works"!

That is an interesting design. Like a beefed up Prometheus-class.

My exposure to Tobias goes a lot further back than that. I found his early Star Trek animations on Aminet; a website or FTP site for the Amiga computer community. Those early ships of his were maybe 40 or 50 polygons total, but his movements and camera work were absolutely amazing!

Ah, the good old days.

UPDATE:

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, I've been working on the conversion of the Archer to Lightwave from Maya.

C.S.S. stands for Confederation Star Ship.

Believe it or not, Galactica was not even in my mind when I designed her. the Art Director, Scott Nakada, said that, like the Ragnarok, he wanted "Pokey-Stabby". That has been our catchphrase for ship design, lol.

When people first saw it, they often compared it to the B5 White Star. And I didnt even think about that ship either, lol. But, before Ron Thornton passed away, I told him in a private message that, this ship would be a Thornton class starship. When he passed away, I made sure that became official.

The more I see of this ship, the more I like it.

It looks like it's moving fast, even when it's standing still. It has some incredible lines flowing through it. I also like what has to be the most unique warp pylon I've seen in a long time.

Thank you. Quite a challenge to design. When I was given this task to do, my first thought was, "How the hell do you make a ship that kinda has the Trek feel when it cant be a trek ship?"

You'll notice there is no deflector dish for instance. No glowing Bussard collectors on the nacelles. I didnt look at other designs, just had input here and there from the art director and let my imagination run, just like it did with the Mako. But I was doing all this on a laptop both on set and in my truck. I got to a point where my laptop couldnt handle the work. We were happy with the concept model so I handed it off to Tobias and he did a fantastic job detailing her.

Also, I'm sure you remember the original Mako?

It got a special upgrade for Requiem. Tim Russ and Walter Koenig both loved it and said, "That looks wicked!"

Between working in the Art department doing set construction, designing new ships and being an extra, I think I had the time of my life. I got to do things I never thought I would ever get to do, like work on a set with Star Trek actors, have lunch with them, Sit in Captain Picard's chair, and best of all, do it all with my son. He and Terry Farrell's son hung out together, so that was cool. And yes, I got Autographs. My Enterprise B is signed by both Walter Koenig and Tim Russ. Just goes to show, you can achieve your lifelong dreams if you work hard enough. And sure, it might not be Official Trek, But, I'll get there. It's still a big chunk gone on my bucket list. ^_^

Remember the Mako? Heck, the one image of it is still in my wallpaper rotation.

It sounds like you had quite a blast working on this and I'm glad you had the experience.

Absolutely stunning designs and renders. Love the bit of backstory as well. Really cool that you got to meet and work with cast and actually be on set. That's great, and yes, with enough work, you can achieve all you want; although a bit of luck and opportunity doesn't hurt!
