Default Most Asked Questions - Image posting and hosting

Foundation 3D requires you to use our server for hosting your images when posting. There are several reasons but here are a few:

• Thread integrity. This insures that threads are never rendered useless due to broken links or unavailable content.
• If your work is highlighted in the news letter or front-page there will always be an image associated with that feature.
• From time to time we create publications highlighting the best work on represented on the site. If we cannot find or get to your image you are automatically left out.
• Threads with broken links and missing images are deleted or moved to a holding area. This means your work is not getting any new attention.

Our content hosting is unlimited and free to all members. Unlimited means there are no limits, this is true so long as you use the single or multi file upload utils. The attachment util has certain limitations.

There are three options for adding images to your posts:

• The Single File Utility
• The Multi-File Utility
• File Attachments

Each has a reason and its own limitations. Until we can find an all in one solution this covers the bases.

The Foundation 3D Upload Options:

This includes links for both the Single File and Multi File Utils.

The Single File Utility will only allow you to upload on file at a time. It’s quick and easy if you have just one image or attachment. It limitations are it will only create thumbnails for jpgs and will only upload one file at a time.

The Multi File Utility is a java applet the allows you to added up to 50 files at a time or up to 80 megs which ever applies. It’s perfect for uploading several images at a time however, it also only works well with jpgs and it doesn’t work well with later version of FF unless you have the IE Tabs plugin sinstalled and open it in the IE Tab. It works well with all versions of IE.

NOTE: As of 3/01/2011 this does not work on Google/Chrome (MAC), Saffari (MAC) and Mozilla Minefield (64 Bit)

Both the Single and Multi File Utils generate the code for displaying the images but you will need to copy and paste it into your post.

*Note that with the Multi File Util you will need to use “Contol C” to copy the code. This is a java applet limitation.

The Attach Files section is where you will fine the native file attachment system. It allows a limited number of uploads at one time and has a cap for the number of files and size limits you may upload to one post. However, it does understand png and bmp files.

If you want inline images select them using the drop down menu as show in this image, select the file(s) you want in the post and VB will paste code for you.

As you can see each option has it advantages and disadvantages, use the one that works best for you or use them all to fit your needs at the time.

I've updated this FAQ to provide better illustration and detail on the different upload options and how to use them.

My thanks as well. I was stumbling about a bit until I came upon your post. Suppose I will give it a try in the WIP section. Thanks again.

When you start or reply to a post, if you scroll down below the edit post box you will see those options.
