Default Misc - Space Maker

I know there are others out here, but this is a start on a small project from me. In the end, I'd like a simple app to spit out starfield backgrounds of any resolution, with possibly nebulae as well. This is where I've got to so far, but a long way to go with the nebulae side of things.

No news is good news - not worked on it for ages....

The nebula generator is using a cellular automata system to make a rough greyscale map now, and then using that as a driver to place nebula elements. Here it is driving a red channel towards the edges, but it can do transparancy or scale or possibly luminosity I guess. The final version should be able to use multiple source textures to create more varied nebulae, with greater colour options.

Progress on a few fronts. I can now load greyscale bitmaps to drive the nebula generation. I'm going to have to start bringing out the variables for user control into a decent GUI next, and clear up the horrific mess I've currently got

This is reminding me a bit of something I saw on Twitter a few weeks ago.

This guy used an open-source Machine Learning deal to make a fictional satellite photo from random noise. It's a style transfer technique, demoed in that article by turning a finger-paint-level landscape into a Renoir pastiche. Here's the code that was used.

Anywho, I was going to see if I could figure anything out using my slim-to-none programming knowledge next time I wanted to make a planet map. I figure you can feed it the Blue Marble month-by-month maps to be able to make Earthlike planets lickity-split without a lot of clone-stamping in Photoshop. Or feed in all the terrestrial planets and moons for generic uninhabitable worlds.

I'm sorting out the GUI. It now drives the nebula from colour images which it can generate or load in. I need to do a driver for the stars next I think so you can place them more intelligently if you like. Maybe use the same driver code.

Unfortunately the app is slowing down. Every process layer I add makes it slower to render. There may be some optimisations but I'm not currently hopeful with larger images. I'm working on a default of 2048x1024 and it's a minute or two to draw a nebula - and I'm thinking this is a single layer in a future multi-layered nebula drawing....
