Default LightWave - Parenting & expressions

I've just converted Calamity_Si's U.S.S. Defender to Lightwave, and have made some new landing gear for her, each strut has 4 toes arrayed at 45 degrees around the foot, these are also parented to the foot, now when the struts retract the toes need to fold up to the foot, (otherwise they wont fit through the hole on the hull).

To do this I set up a null with a rotation limit of minus 90, then made 2 simple expressions so each toe is controlled by this null, (2 expressions because two of them had to rotate +90 and two -90 on each strut), this works like a treat, but now when I raise the struts the toes are no longer parented but stay exactly where they are, I was wondering if this is because I'm controlling some of the motion using said null & expressions which is cancelling out the parenting. I'm very new to using expressions so I'm really not sure what I'm doing
Cheers
Billy

This'll sort out what you're trying to achieve Billy, and Mr V will explain it better than I could here.

Cheers mate, been away for a while so didn't see this until now, I've got all of Williams tutes saved, so I had seen this one, I found the problem though, by mistake, I'd forgotten I'd parented all the movement on the Y axis to another null, silly sod that I am, all fixed now
