Default SciFi - S.I.D. gets a House Call

I must admit, I have a soft spot for Gerry Anderson's various projects over the years. So when Starbase1 did a model of one of my favorite designs from "UFO", SID the A.I. Space Intruder Detector, I had to do a scene with it. I modeled the lifting body space ferry, myself. So I get to combine my Gerry Anderson geekery with my "obscure space hardware that never flew" geekery. Bonus! This is a scene that took place during "Operation: Repair SID"

Done in Lightwave and Photoshop.

Thanks for having a look!
-Tom

Nice! Always good to see a picture with a story, and some human figures for scale!

Maybe the starfield is a little bit too rich?

Nice. The lifting body reminds me of the Dove from Doppelganger.

Thanks, Nick! That is a beautiful model! Yeah, I think the starfield is a little much. I'll dial it down a bit.

Thank you, Andy. I think the Dove was a bit more refined than this one. It kind of surprised me by only having one vertical fin. Most of the lifting body designs I've seen have at least the two outboard fins, and most, like the Dove, have three.

American lifting body designs started with 2 fins (M2-F1, and M2-F2), until NASA found that they had lateral stability problems, so they added the third center fin (M2-F3, HL-10, X-24a, X-24b).

Mikoyan also made a prototype lifting body with a single vertical stab, but I haven't found any information on how well that worked out, nor do I have the time (today, at least) to dig deeper than I already have.

The S.I.D. model is available on Foundation. Look in the Resources. The model is by Starbase 1 (Nick Stevens), and it is a beautiful mesh.
