Well, first I tried using a bump map, but I couldn't get it to look right. So I went for a normal map instead, it's not ideal because they can do some weird stuff when the light is close to side on but it'll do for this.

It's my understanding that displacement would give the best results but that to look good you need plenty of geometry there. I'm trying to ration polys at this stage as I want to put lots of detail in on when nurnying the hell out of the thing.

I've only got a 32bit PC so memory constraints mean I can't be wildly extravagant with polys. Unless I'm wrong about the whole displacement thing.

The latest texture is better, but still too busy IMO. The Omega has a nice contrast design wise between uber detailed bits and open flat areas. I prefer a look which makes that contrast more obvious but as is the whole thing will look really busy and micro-panelled. Anything rendered from slightly further away will make that panelled surface look like noise.

You aren't wrong.

Lightwave's displacement is still dependent on mesh density, other apps have moved past that.

Plus it doesn't do seams between normal directions at all, you can't have a displacement cross over polys at more than a couple of degrees without it shearing.

Normal maps are fine - if gamey, but bare scale in mind. Considering the size of the 747 leaving the hangar those panels are about 20 feet thick. That's one of the reasons I think the over-panelled look doesn't suit it.

Latest attempt at some panels (just the actual panels not the armour edges or backs).

If nothing else I've been learning loads about how to make texture maps

Anyway, let me know what you guys think of these please.

I got a little distracted by the xbox so I've only managed to do a bit of work on the landing bay.

I've got a lot on this weekend so there's not likely to be any updates for a few days.

Love the shot look up from under the nose, I suspect this model will provide some stunning unusual closeup views when done!

Thanls Nick and yeah, I'm sure it will.

Update time...

I've made a few tweaks to the landing bay, I'm quite happy with it now so I think I'll call it done for now.

I've added in the nurnies at the bottom and finished off the antennae down there. I'm not too sure about the pipey bits on the big antenna, they may go.

Good updates, Tony. The paneling looks much better than the previous go at them.

Thanks mate, I must admit I am really enjoying this build and I have been learning a lot doing it too. I got some good advice earlier about the textures and I'm glad I listened and had another go because they are so much better now than they were.

Very nice last set of updates! There's still something that seems a little flat though - could the specular colors/hilights be brought out a bit more?

Thanks Jim, yeah there is still room for improvement in the textures, I've just started experimenting with adding in some ambient occlusion (for the moment adding a node although eventually I'll bake some maps), I dare say they will all get some more love soon.

Didn't get much done today, mostly added stuff to the big antenna and the bits below it.
