Default Creatures - Vortigern: the Wyvern

Time to finish this off, I think. With the film I'm currently on at work winding down as the production wraps I have some more free time again, yay! And I am once again itching to work on something organic. I still quite like this guy, so it's time for a push to finish it off.

In spirit of the new F3D it will be a multi-application adventure. The base was modelled and UV'd in Lightwave, I intend to start doing displacement tonight in Zbrush, and then I will port it into Maya for texturing, setup and rigging. Or thats the plan anyway.

These are old pics, but newer ones are to come.

I really miss the inline upload tool..... Makes posts far, far more interesting to look at.

Yup, we really need that to be carried over. It was uesful for mini tutes and wip stages when pics could be placed in context. (probably one of the old sites best features to be honest)

Glad to see that you're still working on this one Rhys.
I remember your last attempt at rigging with LightWave, looking forward to seeing your displacement tests!

You already know what I think of this beast Rhys. Now I just want to see it finished.

Very nice work overall. I would say the the SSS depth is a bit too high and does funny things with the perceived scale but that's just my opinion. Great work!

I have to agree with TheGreatRaja the last one looks like a sesame street nightmare creature. I can just the count having nightmares over it.

You realise why it looks like that..... right?

I'll have some updates this evening. I added some first level subD zbrush detail, and upped it to level 2 for a short while before getting distracted by Crysis multiplayer again

Some zbrushery on parts of the head which has made it look decidedly klingon.....

I haven't messed around with any stencils yet, but will do so shortly.

Love it. don't think it looks klingon at all. Apart from the little stray ridges on the horns.

Did you ever figure out what was causing the strange streaky stretching was on this mesh when it was brought into ZBrush?

the detail on the head is absolutely amazing! Quick question - for the horns and the beak, are you also going to model in details like age lines and cracks, or are you going to use texture and surface for that?

It's been awhile but, it's used for texture alignment if memory serves me right.....hopefully
My first thought after reading TheGreatRaja's comment about it was seeing the count counting the numbers - One, Two, Three, Hahaha

I really like the zbrush detailing, does that import into lightwave or is it strickly a zbrush model now?

Mikala - I think it was just zbrush being quirky about open ended objects in the model, which is weird since it's accepting them fine now... The model isn't substantially different now to when I tried it before.

Kataar - Yus, theres more to come. I've pretty much only added stuff to the top of the head and beak since I think the areas around the eyes and jaw will need finer detail rather than big ridges. I'll get to those bits later anyhow.

Cybit - Once I've zbrushified it to my content I use my new ZB model to save out displacement maps. These can then be applied inside Lightwave to deform my subpatched base model to the shape of the Zbrush one.

However, I don't find Lightwave's displacement tools to be particularly good. With some arsing about you can get reasonable results but since I'm intending to rig this in Maya anyway I'll do the displacement setup there as well and most probably use the sub-pixel displacement tools which LW lacks.

All - Thanks, more to come!

Sweet work Meurig!

Nice to see that I'm not the only one that find LW displacement.... lacking.

I'm really hoping that it gets addressed in an upcoming update as Zbrush makes it soooooooo easy to make disp and normal maps. It's a shame not to be able to use them to the fullest in LW.

No, you guys are not the only ones who think that. I'm just new to the displacement thing with LW is all.

I agree with what he said Meurig, very sweet work.

Not trying to hijack Meurig's thread, but, when you are writing a post with several images;

1) use Manage Attachments and upload all of the images
2) start writing your post
3) when you want an image in the post somewhere, look at the top of the editing window and click the little paper clip image (just to the right of the white happy face). Select the image you and and you are good to go.

Note: any image "paper clipped" into the post does not appear at the bottom in the attachment area.

I think it was MattMan who figured that out.

Can anyone else see the Zbrush renders I posted a week or so ago? I get a blank page when I click on them now.... Random.

And no, no updates yet. I'm moving house this weekend, have work deadlines today, and have a host of other things going on. Far too busy. Should have calmed down by the end of next week if all goes to plan.

Meurig;

When the server was down last weekend, many images were lost. If you still have an edit button on your posts, just edit the post and upload the images again. And that will also generate thumbnails for them now too.

Good luck with the move and your deadlines!

Moderator-ation = no 90 minute edit limit A nifty benefit.

I don't have the original renders any more, however. Ah well. You'll just have to imagine it with an extra lumpy head in the meantime

Not a problem. I have a good imagination!

And it's an incentive to do a new render!

I don't know about anybody else, but that comment brought a picture to mind - Bugs Bunny standing next to the Wyvern asking "One lump or Two"

I'm patient and have a pretty good imagination so I'll wait.

Here's a link to an amazing bit of work with a bit of step by step on how it was achieved.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/sho...9&page=1&pp=15
If nothing else a bit of inspiration. Oh the step by step starts a few pages in after all the Oh My and Wows.
