Default Maya - Honeycomb grid

Anyone know how to create a honeycomb grid (I can't think of anything else to call it). Basically, its a grid/screen and the holes are honeycomb shaped. I've seen them on rear lights on cars and trucks.

I would like to do something like it on the engine of a spacecraft I'm working on.

The image below, is only example I have on my computer.

Are you talking about a grid out of geometry, or a texture?

geometry. Texture would be a)easy, b)not good looking.

I want to make the holes "honeycomb" shaped.

I thought I saw something about it... just can't remember where I saw it.

I would just make a disk with 6 sides. Scale/bevel it in so you have the right width to the edge. Clone it across so its as wide as the screen you're building. Then copy the whole thing and move it up and right so it fits correctly. Repeat until its tall enough. You could just use a lattace deformer to bend it to the proper shape once its done.

This only took a couple min to make. I didn't take into account that the surface would be double the width when you started cloning it but as an example it should do.

That's what I was going for in the image; it's mostly a flat area. One day I'll put it up in WiP
