Default Misc - Silly Balls Revisited

This was an render I had. One of the few things to survive on my hard drive. Now that I had more processing power and got the itch to do some 3D stuff again, I re-worked a simple scene and tried to fix some issues I had with it and do a much better render.

I had this over in the WIP section: http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/s...668#post329668 Thanks to Digital Origami for the original work he did that made me want to set this scene up and fiddle with it. Anyways, I did two final renders. One in the original style and one with a reflective floor that looked kind of interesting.

Rendered in 3DS Max 2011 with Mental Ray.

Very cool! I was inspired by a number of luminous scenes similar to that and as I was just getting started in Modo at the time, I wanted to see if I could re-create something like them. I remember not having the luminous material set up quite right and the reflections in the other balls looked wonky.
Nice stuff!

Thanks. I still don't have this set up the way it should be in Max. I had to cheat to get the image to work. But, I suppose there is no cheating if the image comes out as desired.

MKF suggested that I mess with exposure settings and such to try it that way. He came up with an approximation that looked cleaner, and rendered in 24 minutes rather than mine taking over an hour and the reflective one took over 4 hours to render.

Although I did go quite ham-fisted on the final gather settings, well beyond the very high preset to try and get the light as smooth as possible.

Probably mess with some of the settings MKF mentioned and give that a go. See if it can't produce the same results faster.
