Default BSG - Trying a Mercury class. :)

Someone once said, that a 3d modeler building a Connie is like a Jedi building his
first lightsaber. Well, I think I'm going for my Jedi mastery by building a battlestar.

I'm also asking for general advice from those of you, who have build monster ships
like the battlestars, star destroyers, omega destroyer, etc. I know how to UV, and
I'm learning the material tree for several programs. Any advice on painting the mega
ships would be appreciated, even a tutorial about ship materials.

As you can see, the engines are almost complete, and I roughly blocked in the other
sections. Now I'm off to look for even more refs. ^_-
I'm still not back online, so I'll be back the next time I'm at my sister's place, in a few
days.

The rear section of the ship looks really nice. The modelling looks very smooth and clean.

Yes, TanJ is the Battlestar master. I'd heard he was having some trouble with
another user regarding his models. Wouldn't be that guy from ShareCG, would it?
He has a few of TanJ's battlestars converted to Poser and posted there. He didn't
even get the textures right. <shakes head>

Anyway, I'll try to reach him for advice.

Thanks, Rigel. Glad to see you're still here. Been awhile.
I honestly wasn't sure I could do it, but it looks good, so far.
I'm actually building this for my Imperium Fleet, so there will
be variations from the Mercury class, guns above and below, for
example. I was VERY surprised to find that the Peg was almost
uncovered above, and almost as bad below. Good thing Cylons
are dumb.

Mid Section Almost finished , and I've started detailing the hammerhead section. Since this is not a colonial battlestar, but a Terran one,
there will, of course, be a few differences. I used the Mercury class as my inspiration. ^_-

The Myth class Battlestars, besides having the same side armaments as the Mercury, also have four turrets above and below.
The Imperium, however, has not used rail guns for around 300 - 400 years. At this stage, their primary weapon is the 5th
generation pulsed Heterodyne Lasers. Makes for a nasty opponent. ^_-

First pic is Kraken from the side.
Second and Third pics are from the back and from below
after I finished the detailing on the Midsection.
Fourth is the finished Imperium Emblem. (The Imperium is my Empire from Aurora 4x)
Fifth is getting the Landing Bay detailing started.

Great detailing. I am still not sure what the best way is to make those panels on the hull. Duplicating the basic shape then cutting deleting and bevelling?

Here's the method that one of the modelers from Blood and Chrome used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glGYrj7TXTw

I still have that Peg, by AldrikG and Lightwave conversion by Elowan I believe.
As far as I know, it was the only Peg that was available, though I do know others
who had built her.

Here are some shots, from different angles, of the basic detailing to the Bay interiors.
Once I do the lower bays, I'll move to the hammerhead for a while. ^_-

Basic detailing on the lower bays completed.

Hmmm. Got the windows done as separate objects as it gives more control over the
windows, but the poly count REALLY took a hit. The only other way has a poly count
almost as high. I could make them low detail, but that looks out of place on a high
detail ship. We'll see how it goes. Current poly count for the entire ship is around
921,000 polys.

Using Modo 5 by Luxology. I have others too, but Modo is the one I'm
most comfortable with.
