Default Transportation - Motorbike Modeling

Not in love with Maya as I used to be - but modeling with it is much more fun than before. Currently working on this bike, suppose to be a Harley Davidson. Trying to apply stuff I've learned from several motorcycle modeling lessons.

Comments, critiques and suggestions are welcome. I'm planning to keep posting updates.

I'm curious how you punched out the slots and holes in the disks? Did they finally get booleans working in Maya? It was one of the biggest complaints that I heard from people that use it.

@Rigel: Thanks a lot!

@BillS: Definitely. It's still pain. Worked fine with these simple brake discs. I added all the details first, bevelled - smoothed corners etc. When I'm done I applied booleans. I know it's not a good way of modeling but I had to Also still thinking about remodeling the brake discs.

On the gear cover boolean didn't worked at all. After smoothed the mesh when I apply boolean object disappeared. Couldn't found any solution - searched the net and on forums everyone says "don't use booleans" So I modeled holes on the cover one by one manually.

By the way, I know there are modeling tools add-on kind of stuff for 3D applications. I saw PowerNURBS for 3ds Max. Is there a plugin/add-on for Maya to improve poly-modeling tools? If anyone knows please let me know too

Kerem, since Maya can do NURBS, what if you just used a NURBs object for the brake disc? Then you could easily boolean out the holes.

That's really true!

I have a Cinema 4D background. Used to do all my modelings with it and that's why I get used to model with polygons. I switched to Maya long time ago but still didn't get used to NURBS modeling workflow I think old habits never die but I really should get into that way of modeling.

And thank you!

Another thing you might consider is to model that one piece with a NURBS object then convert the nurbs shape to a poly mesh, and then you are back to having everything polys.

Hmm, it needs more sharpening on edges of holes and outer edge.

Can you make the circle inserts with 6 sides of 4? Maybe that will make it look a little rounder?

Talking

Tried different designs for brake discs but didn't liked any of them and deleted. I think I'll use current ones. Then moved on and modeled the belt drive and swing arm.

Comments critiques and suggestions are extremely welcome!

Hello again friends

Some renders from current progress. I'm having that weird artifacts on surfaces - those blobby spheres you may notice. I hope this is because smooth mesh preview rendered on mental ray. And I really hope they go away when I actually smoothed the mesh. Because surfaces are perfect on viewport

Well this is Maya... Everything unreasonable is possible with it.

Exported the model from Maya as OBJ and imported to Cinema to get a better render.

Thinking to transfer that project to C4D and drop using Maya forever LOL

There isn't a whole lot of options out there now that AD owns most of it.

So when this is done, you going to do a nice hypersport bike?
