A bomb aimed at a star... Sounds a bit silly - unless you have seen this genuine bit of video, which is currently causing a major rethink amongst solat physicists... The suspicion at forst was that this was a coincidence of timing, but apparently as they look at it, it seems a lot too tight in timing and orientation.

SOHO footage afo a comet diving into the Sun and apparently triggering a coronal mass ejection event. The comet is tiny, the ejection vast.

Just in case folks haven't seen it, this gif animation from SOHO images on
SpaceWeather.com has to be one of the more thought provoking ( and
spectacular) things I've seen recently.

Be careful your eyes don't fall out. Link to the animation first:
spaceweather.com/images...

And, for the commentary, just scroll a tiny bit down the front page of:
htttp://www.spaceweather.com
Apologies if this is too off topic!

Can't remember for sure, but I think the thinking was that the bomb was somehow going to get the increasingly unstable sun back into a stable condition.

And that comet doesn't look tiny if the disc is the sun.

That sounds reasonable to be honest. Well, I did something of the sort lol, I created a 'base plate' and more of the cabling to make it appear as if the base of the booster cluster is in fact attached to the shield. Hopefully it will not detract from the original appearance from the movie.

I also have been working on detailing the docking hub where the Icarus attaches to the payload & shield, some details were again left out in the movie version seeing as how dark it was - giant holes where there should be at least a modicum of detail, one would think. So I created the locking mechanism under the premise that the Icarus is a kilometer long ship attaching to a mile wide shield - so the connections better be sturdy lol.

That tiny little hole in the center of the small circular eruption in the center of the hub is the airlock to pass into the payload section...

So here goes...

Wow! That is.... a sincere mix of scary and amazing! Wow! No, not really off topic at all IMHO. THANK you for that link... I think lol!

Amen to that - that comet must have been relatively huge to appear like that! Wow!

Well - what I understand from the premise behind the story is that some sort of dark matter had fallen into the sun from a neighboring Super Nova (something like that - the book is called Solaris) and the interaction under the intense gravity and heat was sapping the sun of it's energy output and fuel efficiency (again - something like that >.> ). The intention was not to 'restart' the sun per se, but to actually disperse the dark matter somehow to enable the sun to regain it's efficiency. Yada yada bing bang and all that science talk...

Default Just the little details...

A wider shot of the main shield minus the Icarus 2 ship showing the detailed Docking Hub... just a few minor details on the shield and then I can take this back into my other file and start texturing and lighting this beast... this part is going to be a bear to light...

The lighting from the main shield here will also affect the ship therefore I will have to go back to the ship and tweak the lighting there to compensate. Oi!

What you are seeing there is the outgassing - a comets coma/tail is a better vacuum than the best you can get on Earth in a lab - the comet itself, even a big one like Halley, is typically a dirty snowball a few miles across.

Here's a scene that someone had a question about on another site, the scene is an attempt to copy the movie at time code 1:31:07 where Capa has initiated the emergency separation procedure and is making his way from the doomed ship to the payload...

Heavily photoshopped to try and mimic the scene, not quite there, but sorta close lol

Thanks bro, just trying to mimic what they had in that scene. Even on BlueRay viewing in HighDef, there is plenty of grain in that particular scene. I think it was intentional. I know I got some of the background color wrong - and I will attempt to fix that

i know saw the replys on yer DA and dont get me wrong imo grain is a good thing there is just a tiny amount to much in this one for my own personal prefference.

as for the pic/scene as a whole i think youve done a great job and i didnt even notice the color being slightly off in the BG until you mentioned it and i loaded up the dvd to check it out :P

Hey man... you following me around? That's kinda creepy ROFL! Haha!

Thanks mate. I'll have to do a screenprint of the scene in question and upload it here... the thing that is really getting me is the brightness in their background... that's a real pain to try and duplicate. Argh!

Even though I am chomping at the bit to get back to this model, unfortunately I can't at the moment as I have been commissioned for a rather large space station model, and animating it too O_o really under the gun on that project. As soon as I can finish up with the station I will immediately return to this project

Hey bro, sorry for the LONG delay in answering this, yeah still on the back burner - but I am hoping to get back to it VERY soon. My main PC has been locked up by the station build and running Vue renders for an Italian film for AGES now *pouts* lol. All is good though. I pull the ship out every now and then in a free moment and I have been jotting down some ideas for when I get back to it, which should be this month if everything works out good.

As cantankerous as Vue is I can do nothing with my PC while Vue is running - it's a crashy program on it's own without something else taking up resources lol.
