Default At long last - an UPDATE!

FINALLY getting around to updating this some... concentrating on the structure right now, and I think I'm going to revamp the textures using bodypaint.

When I first saw what you have modeled I thought that you worked for the company that made the sfx and that this was the version used in the film. It is truely amazing what you have done.

Also, that's a really odd render style, makes it look almost like an engraving. (particularly on smaller images). Its a cool effect - how did you do it?!?

It's an Ambient Occlusion render (at least I think it is), Meurig has a tutorial here on how to do it in Lightwave.

Thanks, it's simply a custom Ambient Occlusion render. Pure white material added to the structure and to the environment, then custom settings (ray length & accuracy) in the AO tab in render effects settings on C4D. It helps to see the detail a bit better when running a test render.

Yep! I was just in the process of answering that, but you hit the nail on the head lol! AO render, custom settings to make the detail pop.

Default 'Nutha update

Okay, here we go. My one big issue with this ship has been the lighting - my "White Whale" so to speak... How do you light a ship as they had it, yet keep it in the dark most of the time...

The answer has been to go back to the movie, and examine CLOSELY nothing but the lighting. I think this go 'round with the lighting is on the right track. One thing I noticed this time in the movie is that the top lights on the framework are NOT flood lights or even simple bulb lights. They are light bars, that essentially look like over-sized industrial florescent lamps to be honest.

So what do you guys think? On the right track? Mind you there are not any materials yet... I want to get the lighting as close to what is in the movie as possible so that I can get the color and style of my materials correct in that lighting.

Yep, I like where you are headed. You might want to check out the Helios by JasonT. It has a really good light rig and may give you some ideas.

Sweet! Thanks since it's a download I'll have to check it out I hope tomorrow. Though LW light rigs don't translate too well to C4D. C4D opens LW just fine, but the lights always come out maxed out and weird lol.

The light rig is very effective. It gives the ship the appearance of an industrial site at night.

Default More Lighting

Well here's the last update for this evening before I crash for the night, a few minor tweaks on the lighting, and started moving both forward and aft with the lighting. Not too sure about the ring of lights around the airlock....

I like where you're heading with the lighting on this, very nice. have to agree that the airlock lighting seems too isolated from the rest, but it still looks right, there just needs to be some lighting to connect it to the rest of the ship a bit more.

You know what that last shot looks like to me? Cold, very, very cold. It makes me think of the Antarctic research bases.

Thank you. Well I will not really be putting in any lighting they didn't have, trying for authenticity really, and the overall ship was dark, really dark. Parts slipping off into blackness. I think it was intentional on their part in the movie to emphasize the isolation and distance from any other human or help for that matter.

Thanks! Or.... the cold, the utter cold of space lol! Quote from Corrie in the movie, "...without suits? It's minus 275 degrees!"

That looks really good, imo. I Like the lights on the airlock and I think as you add more lights to the rig they should blend in ok.

Another update on the lighting, going slow, but I'm trying to be accurate. I hate bad lighting lol, it can throw a whole scene off! (I've been guilty of that a time or two :P )
