Try selecting the polygons in the area you want to stencil and triple tool to turn them into triangles. Then try the stencil.

I'm still getting the error message. I don't want to say it's the PC because we use these computers for projects that use a lot more memory than this program would. Is there another way to stencil without having to use that tool?

I think it may be that the model is too big...I just tried stenciling on a simple flat surface and it worked with no problem..

I know this sounds cliche, but I find a reboot sometimes fixes that problem. Sometimes there's something in your RAM that is taking up the memory needed to perform the stencil.

After a reboot, fire up LW and do the stencil first thing.
I hope that fixes your issue.

Try cuting the polygons you want to stencil out of the main reactor layer and paste them in a new layer. Then try stencilling them. If that works, cut and paste the stenciled polygons back into the main layer and merge the points (press "m").

In regards to stenciling, I often find that using Solid Drill works better than regular Drill.

Here's an example:

Take a cylinder.

Then create a triangle or something in another layer, and use Radial Array to make multiple triangles running around the outside of the cylinder.

Bevel the triangles inward (without tapering them), and resize the whole kabob until the triangle objects are partially inside the background cylinder.

Then swap layers, select Solid Drill Stencil

And you should have a completely uniform stencil all around the circumference of the object.

Pretty much whatever contour shape the 3d object in the stencil layer makes as it passes through the foreground object will be the stencil, adding a lot more control over conventional stencils.

Yes they certainly are. This tutorial gave me quite a few good heads up to streamline and accelerate my modeling, so thank you for the time and care put into it.

You can do the same thing with Booleans/ProBooleans for those working in 3ds Max.

The offer always stands. We need more firefly models.
Here you go.

If you actually build the entire thing, I would love a copy.

WOW this is a great model to build, I built the large ship the "Dreadnaught" from "Babylon 5" some years ago with Lightwave version 7.5. I have used it (toyed with it that is) nothing professional, since version 5.0.
I actually know the guy that actually built this ship for the movie, he is Jose Perez from Miami Fl, we conversed and met online way back and he basically taught me LW over the internet thru ICQ, he works from home and does great work, his website is

www.fxstation.com if anyone wants to check his work out, he has done lots of great stuff,
looks like I will have to get it installed on my laptop now, MY PC is too slow and bogged down with so much stuff, I guess after I post I will be able to access the background images , so far it will not let me access this page yet....
http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/s...d.php?t=1221#1

TKS again for this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff

BTW any LW users near sunny Daytona beach Fl give me a shout, maybe we can trade ideals/tips to get me back on track again..

I'm actually kind of surprised. At the old site (Lightwave Group) the Serenity turtorial had something like 120,000 views, and it's nearly up to 35,000 views.

The subpatch tutorial I'm doing is just over 95,000 views.

Maybe I should run a contest that has folks using these tutorials as a basis.
...build a specualtive firefly (series 1, series 2, series 3, series 4, series 20)
...best spaceship design for the Firefly verse
...best 3d person for use in resources section
...best science fiction character

Hi guys!!

Brand new absolutely beginner here, and I'm absolutely dying to try this model.

Would it be possible to get the completed version (including textures), so that I can do comparisons as I work through this?

Unfortunately, no. I cannot share my build as per NDA with QMx.
But these hi-res wireframes should help:

http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/s...&postcount=186

There are several other on the forum that have built copies. You might ask around. Also, darthviper made an exquisite one in MAX format. It's posted in the site resources.
