Default Babylon 5 - Station

Latest project using the excellent high resolution reference images shown on The Meshweaver site of the B5 Station model created by Fabio Passaro for the film "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales".
I was loathe to post this at such an early stage as I've noticed at least two attempts have been posted on this site, which were either not completed or not released and I don't want anyone to be under the illusion that this will be a quick build either! This is a high resolution model and I'm creating my own normal mapped panel textures as I go along. No "Generic Panels" here!

I'll post further images as I complete each module. Next up will be the partial spherical module forward of this main cylinder.

Hope you like!

I've never done one because I'm too wary to do one, yet I've started a falcon Still, this looks good so far and I hope it goes all the way to completion. Fabio's TLT looked utterly gorgeous on screen. Shame the actual show wasn't what I expected.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

I can understand a few wondering if yet another attempt at this will be completed as my own record on that score is fairly poor. But my eyesight is now quite good and so is my motivation. I've always wanted to do this one. "And so it begins!"

Here's a small progress render. I'm gradually working my way forward to the place of mega-nurnies!

I notice that the normal map strength and the diffuse are a tad high in this render. The textures will need some work!

Thanks again for the comments and encouragement!
This will be the last update for a week. Going on holiday to the Med!

I've dumped those nasty distracting textures for the moment to more easily see the actual polygonal detail.

I'm not sure you should be allowed a holiday. We want progress!

I love that station. It's actually difficult to watch the last episode. Not for Sheridan, although that's rough, but for B5 to die in fire always tears me up.

Thanks for the comments, Guys. Had a great break but I'm back on Babylon 5 now. Here's a bit of a start on the docking sphere neck details and lift structure. Loads more nurnies to do here!

It's early days so I'd watch out for your modelling resolution. I can already see segmentation in your distant renders, which'll mean it won't stand to being seen any closer than that.

Just forgot to turn on smoothing for that neck area, which is only 60 sided! The sphere and cylinder meshes are 120 sided so with a 10 degree smooth on that is quite adequate close up! I may increase that neck mesh to 120 if it still causes problems although it will be covered appreciably with greebles etc.

Apologies for the delay in updates. We had visitors for a few days and I spent far too much time eating and drinking!

Here's some more progress on the Docking Sphere neck details. I'm looking forward to finishing this area so I can start on the Cobra Bays!

Someone is bound to ask, so the stats so far are:
Total poly count = 132K
Comprising:
Docking Sphere 7.5k
Main Cylinder Body 78k
Neck Area and Lift Details 46k
