Default Military - King George V (1939) class battleships

Uh... It's Back to the Future Day. Time to finish this at last??

Lighting is horrific as I have 30 minutes left This is basically as I found her. Last worked on in 2006. All I've done with it today is throw together a new render environment, that's currently crap, and very very rough lighting/render setup.

Also, it's Trafalgar Day. Everyone has forgotten that

This looks very good. And I even like the washed-out look to the lighting.

There are a number of mesh issues that need fixing; she's sadly not up to my current modeling standards, but I'm not going to try anything crazy like a full rebuild at this point.

Thanks guys. I've managed to find a whole load of additional reference photos that I swear were not available online when I originally built this thing (thanks to the Imperial War Museum - many great shots of life aboard the ships of this class). Highlighted some errors in a few areas of the model that I wish to address before I get stuck in to texturing etc. You have to draw the line on detail somewhere with a subject of this size, but there are some fundamental detail innacuracies that I must fix Working on the secondary 5.25" guns at the moment, should hopefully make solid progress on those tomorrow.

Never thought I could actually be slower than 10 years ago, but it turns out I can! Amazing

I was initially just going to pick up where I'd left off, and finish this ship. Slap on some textures, make a few tweaks here and there. But oh no, I had to go looking over it, comparing it to all these new reference photos I was suddenly trawling the web for (there are tons more available than 10 years ago).

Because it's me, 'just finishing it' involves correcting all the problems I've spotted. That's a good thing, as far as I'm concerned - I'm enjoying playing around with this thing again (and it probably stops me from starting another one from scratch )

SO. Where to start? The 5.25" Mk.I. quick-firing dual purpose secondary guns seemed like a good place. Much of the detailing on these was quick weak and superficial, and wrong. Here's how I left them in 2006:

I all but completely rebuilt them. Probably should have, but I have it in mind to avoid completely rebuilding geometry as far as possible. In this case however, all that remains of the orignal is the basic turret, which has been tweaked a little in shape at the front. All other details were replaced, including the barrels.

This is the corrected turret for the May 1941 configuration of King George V. A tentative start has been made on materials. The deck is completely temporary - it is plucked straight from my HMS Agamemnon model (even older!). Hull colour is roughly right. There is essentially no reliable reference for the exact shade, but I feel this is reasonably close. I have made the necessary extra components for the December 1941 Prince of Wales, which I might do as well later.

And as I have reasonably firm plans to make the modifications for the 1945 configuration of Duke of York, I have built the extra details that were added to the guns sometime in 1943.

More to follow, eventually Probably going to look at the catapult launch system next. What I have in that area right now is woeful.

Very nice, Peter!

Does the "1939" refer to when you first started this way back on Military Meshes?
Loved your "HMS Agamemnon" and still do! I never managed to finish my HMS Victory though (...yet!)

Lovely detail on the King George V.

Ted

Not much point doing a render at this stage, but I have been performing some extensive surgery on the hull.

It turns out that one of the ships, Prince of Wales, had a slightly differently shaped hull compared with the other four ships. And as the Law of Sod dictates, I had modelled this version (albeit with some slight inaccuracies) instead of the regular version. The distinguishing feature is the crease towards the top of the hull in the bow area.

But it turns out that I also made the bow itself too sharp, not to mention the fact that the portholes are too segmented, and generally just wrong. So all the portholes were removed; the bow was rebuilt, and the two different versions of the hull were sorted out. Coloured polygon patches show where there is reconstructed geometry.

This is the 'regular' hull, with no crease at the bow:

And this is the Prince of Wales hull, with the crease (although this is an all new crease, since the bow needed reprofiling):

There is an additional crease, present on all the hulls and found most of the way along the sides of the ship that I had missed entirely before, so I had to add this in as well.

Eventually, there will be a total of three different hulls, since King George V, whilst using the regular hull design, had rectangular window hatches in the stern, whereas all the other ships had regular portholes. Although these were replaced during a refit, so that in her later life all survivng KGVs had essentially identical hulls (although with different porthole configurations, as most of them ended up being plated over at some stage, but not always the same ones on each ship!)

And no apologies for the less than stellar wire view This was built over 10 years ago, after all. Needless to say, it would look better if I did it from scratch. Not happening, though.

Need to sort out displacement and normal maps for this soon, as these hulls were not smooth like this...

Bleh, not had much time for 3D the last few months. Chipping away at it when I get the chance though.

Hull reworking is nearing completion - just a few tweaks left up at the bow, mainly. Here's a stern shot for now though. I have removed and replaced all of the portholes. They're now a bit smoother, more accurate in size and detail, the drainage eyebrows above them are vastly better than before, and I have researched their correct positions. Turns out there were a few differences in that regard between King George V, Prince of Wales and Duke of York. The stern deadlights where totally rubbish before; they now have their hatches (KGV-only; these were regular portholes on all 4 other ships in the class). I also had to replace the bow and stern sections of the external degaussing coil (again, KGV only; the other 4 had it fitted internally, as did KGV by the end of 1942). The shape of the split for the name (which I never modelled) was quite wrong previously. Much better this time around. Also there is a name. Fortunately I was able to find a couple of photos that meant I was able to match the typeface very well indeed. Same goes for Duke of York. Prince of Wales originally had a name on the hull, but this was plated over by the time of Force-Z. Also, the propellors were fitted the wrong way around, and their blades weren't shaped quite right. Both things are fixed, although the material could use some work!

Here's how this used to look...

The bow shows more improvement, but I'm not quite finished there yet. Deck-edge features have disappeared because I have altered the level of the deck in the hull. They were also all crap and need replacing.

So here's the totally rebuilt bow, with new anchors, new anchor handling gear, new everything, basically. Started unwrapping the anchor model earlier, and then decided to leave that for another day

The hull has the beginnings of a normal map representing the hull plating. Quite a lot to do on that yet.

I've removed a few things - temporary deck texture, guardrails... these are to be replaced later. Looking forward to moving back towards the core of the ship now!

And here's a comparison with how things used to look up there... things were bad before!

Since it has been a couple of weeks since the last update, here I am again with some more

I have ripped out the crappy old catapult. Honestly, it was so pathetic, it's not even worthy of the name:

I can't even blame lack of references for one way in which it's bad. It followed the deck camber. Just imagine how well those turntables would have worked!

OK, so that had to go. The Imperial War Museum has published hundreds of photos of these ships since I originally finished work on this model. They are amazing. They might be small, but there are so many of them that I can work out literally almost every detail That catapult trolley though... it appears in the corners of several photos, but there are areas of it that you just can't make out clearly. I think I came up with something reasonably close to the real thing. It won't be perfect by any means, but it shouldn't be obviously wrong either.

I haven't touched any of the surrounding superstructure yet, besides opening the hangar doors a little to avoid clashing with the rails, which I have shifted slightly from their original positions. Also the bottom of those doors is totally wrong.

Quick note - my lighting seems to have become worse since the last batch of renders. I didn't spend any time setting these up, so it's entirely down to my laziness. The next updates won't be so far down the road and I intend to put some time in on getting this sorted out as it's getting embarrasing now
