Looking very nice mate. Where's the subscribe button...?
I wouldn't worry about not like identical to Sean's, my stuff never looks identical to my reference either. A little bit of creative license is good for you!

Default A Ship's Name

I came up with a name for my Firefly class freighter.

Lady Bug!

piaw chong in Chinese

Below are three graphics of the ship's name plate. The only difference is the font used on the English name.

Up top is a poll. Please vote on which font you prefer and after a week or so, I'll make my final decision on it.

Busy day tomorrow, getting ready to go on a vacation trip for 5 days. Then I'm leaving Wednesday morning and not back until Sunday.

Updates will resume once I return.

Default Part 5 - Completed

Thank you everyone who voted on the ship's name graphic. The third one is the winner! I was leaning towards that one anyways.

I worked through Part 5 today (inbetween studying Cash Flow Statements and going to school).

LOL

Don't feel bad. I've been building CG models for -- geez has it really been 16 years?? Boo-yah!

I also started with Lightwave's predecessor called VideoScape, in which you built a model by writing a list of 3D coordinates (one set for each point) then wrote a list for which points made up each polygon. Tedious, but it really drove home the concept of 3D coordinate systems.

I also have 28+ years of building physical models; kits, kit bash and scratch built. While the manual skills don't resemble anything done in CG, that does give me a lot of experience in seeing how things go together.

Nonetheless, my CG skills still leave much to be desired. Keep practicing and it will come.

Don't get discouraged. It takes time and practice. Believe me.... I know first hand what it means to have to force feed LW.

Default Part 6-A Complete

@Raffs - thanks mate!

I worked through part 6a this evening.

For the regulator platform on the bottom and the indented detail on the top, I cut out those sections, deleted the triangles, rebuilt the polygons, then put the details back in. The overlap between details and triangles on the sides wasn't great enough to warrant this "plastic surgery" in those areas.

Also, revisited the retro-rockets and shaved 52 thousand polys out of them.

That's pretty good. Has anyone ever noticed how the reactor flaps can't actually open? They each have two hinges on a curved hull, to actually flip open--the hinges would pull the flaps in half.

I noticed that the first time I downloaded Treybor's tv version of Serenity and started to rig it. Ideally the shutter should have just one hinge in the middle, but, oh well. I think I mentioned this in the tutorial chapter on rigging and animating; just don't get close enough with the camera to show the problem.

Thanks Lee. I like how this is turning out. Of course, I have yet to get to the dreaded neck part.

Epiphany, Shear is in the "Modify" Menu.

Shearing is making an object slant to one side. A good example is italicized text.

A word "LIKE THIS" Sheared would look "LIKE THIS"

Think of Shear as Move with axial falloff. That is, the strength of the moving influence is not equal across the object, but gradually falls off along a selected axis.
