Yep, Marcus, going about how unfair the universe is, then he said he drew comfort from that because if it was fair, that meant all the cr@p you get in life you deserved.

Whats the point in being negative or overly judgemental. There's too much to do. If and when I find myself falling into that way of thinking, and we all do from time to time. I throw myself into a project or go push the weights around or try to find something constuctive to do with my time. The same goes for my job. It may be self serving but I like to be the guy they come to when there's a problem. I can be a bit of a wise guy though. The other day a group of us were at California Pizza Kitchen and after looking over the menu, I asked the manager how often they had to book time at M.I.T's Random Topping Generator. He didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did.

Usually the cynical side of me would make me say something extremely sarcastic here, but there's one thing this guy said that I really agree with. Choice. Everything we do is, or at least should be, a choice. Choosing to be positive not withstanding, choice really is the only thing we have control of in our lives. Even in the situations where we 'have no choice' we do, we simply automatically choose what we feel is the best choice and pretend the other options were no choice at all.

One of my favorite lines from SG-1 was the episode in which Daniel died. Uh, I mean, died for good. Or at least, for a year. Oma says to him, "The Universe is so big, and we are so small. There is only one thing we really have any control over." Daniel replied, "What's that..." "Whether we are good or evil." The sci fi, ficitonal theme of that not withstanding, the writers of the series were right: we choose who we be. Our choices may be informed by the events and conditions around us, but ultimately it's up to us.

I happen to love that part in SG-1, as well. Those few lines really do sum it up well.
