Default Fantasy - Ice Queen

Hey guys, its been a while.

I havent had any motivation to do 3d work recently. Was doing a Steampunk piece for the CGTalk challenge, but lost motivation when i started modeling, so yeah, thats come to that.

So, I've decided to do something that interests me a little more - a little organic fantasy work. i'll just let it go and see what happens, I just want to start completing images again. This one, hopefully will be done in time for submission to Exotique.

Modeled in Modo over... I think abt 3-4 h over a few days.

I agree, the intricacies in the design are really well done and I for one am looking forward to seeing more

Thanks for the comments.

I'll go back and add a little more detail to the crown later, but for now I want to establish the rest of the figure first. Today's progress is...

the Head! Not including the ears. Maybe I'll do that later.

Note quite the best topology I know, there's a lot of odd pinching here which makes the face not quite so smooth. However I'm fine with that - i'll likely paint over it in Photoshop later in the final image if its too obvious.

Really?

If she does then I have accomplished what I set out to do with the face

This next one is after a lot of tweaking and some more modeling on different parts. Don't be afraid to criticise anything you feel isnt good enough - thats the way i improve.

btw, in the final image her head is viewed from the side.

Hello

Stunning!

I am new to 3D. using lightwave.

love the crown's details amazing. i'm dabbling in face modeling. you made this all from scratch right? do you draws the design first or just start in LW?

I noticed a term you used "Pinching" this is when 5 polygons meat a point or vertices in sub patch mode?

look forward to see the finished babe... i mean ice queen.

LOL! I didnt see that coming.

Yup I made it from scratch, with some rough facial features in my mind. I used reference photos only for the spacing of the features (none of the features will line up with my refs).

I actually did have something more "queenish" in mind. This one actually looks a little young, but nevermind - I shall see what I can get away with. If it doesnt work in the image then I can always come back and change it.

Well... pinching... can usually be found by doing that - yes, you'll get a pinch at a point where lots of subpatch polygons meet. However, you can also get a similar "bump" if you will when a veeeeery long curved subpatch meets a short one, or the edges arent aligned properly. I think if you have proper topology there will be a lot less pinching, but I don't want to spend the time perfecting it all now.

looking great snowstorm.. my only crit would be that it looks to me like your forhead curves back to early.. the only sections of it that really 'stand' out to me.. but again that's also personal choice

just noticed it.. could be the angle/material.. but snow, what's with the dint below the eye on the nose? here.. circle is around it.. the image next to it is me trying to work out the flow.. with a quick sketch over the top of your image.. which shows that it's definantly flowing right.. least in my mind.. anyway just that little dent caught my eye.. like i said likely just angle/lighting.

Ah, that would actually be where the eye meets the nose.

The one thing I noticed in the side view of the completed head and collar is that the neck angles back. The neck normally curves forward slightly; her head appears to be sitting too far back in relation to her shoulders.

If you go any lower, I'll have to put a nudity warning on your title.

Nudity warning? On a Snowstorm thread? Not a chance :P

I'm not going to model any bits that I dont need - I dont have the time atm. And I dont plan on doing any nude studies in the near future either.

Anyway, been busy and a bit of a rough patch of modeling. Hand's been difficult, but I think I've gotten most of it down, now just to finish up, do her legs, then its on to the clothing. So much left to do.

Whats left: Still got to finish detailing her crown, do her throne, do a little bit of the background, then texture, light, render in high res, and paint over.

Wow. looks like i've got quite a bit to go. Time to spend more time on this.

Anyway, only 1 wip shot today. Moved the head forward a bit as suggested. Hand is beside the face because i'm using the face as a size reference.

The hand is starting to shape up well. Overall this is a brilliant piece of work.

Take your time and get it right. No point in rushing it.

And you are getting it right!

I'm back!

Finally, after days of laziness, and also some enforced internet silence I'm working on the Ice Queen again. The last few days without internet access have been maddening to say the least.

So, yes, progress is slower than ever, and I feel like I will miss the Exotique deadline, but it doesnt matter. My main goal is to finish this piece no matter what. And when I say finish it it has to be a polished and properly professional piece.

It's looking well on it's way to being professional and polished. I have the same mindset with my project, as I'm still learning as I go, things are taking me a lot longer than expected. At least it's a hobby for me so I don't have any deadlines. Just keep pluggin away!
