Default Transportation - Lightwave 9.3 Josh2481's Stock Car Model.

So some time ago I started my stock car project. I've decide to rebuild it. Here are some shots of what the old model looked like.

So I started on the roll cage first. I haven't gotten far but I decided to make the cage a single mesh as my first attempt was really just a bunch of different objects that intersected each other. Currently its just an 8 sided cylinder that will later either be sub-d or catmull-clark.

As always c&c is welcome. I know there isn't much yet but It should shape up nicely before long.

I remember when you started the original, was a nice project then. I suspect it's going to be a nice project now. I see some area's on the cage that might be a problem when you subd, haven't used catmull yet.
If this is the one that might have my engine, I'll be watching

JK, I'd watch no matter what.

Yes I plan on using your engine in this. Though I do have to change it some sadly. Mostly just the radiator, exhaust, and drive shaft. Which areas you talking about? I know I need some more poly's around some areas if I go sub-d. Though I'm still thinking of using edge weights and catmull-clark.

Your using LW 9.3 so it might not be as much of a hassle as in 8 but these kind of joints always give me heartache, even when using the the weight map tool. The simple fix I found is to use the knife tool and make a cut really close to the joint. Add's slightly to the poly count but does the job nicely.

I too remember your other stock car Josh. And this one is looking to be every bit as good.

Glad to see you haven't given up on the Ol' Stock Car. You've got a pretty good start on the new roll cage. Cybit has a good fix for the joints; it's definitely worth the additional polys. Are you using any reference material?

Oh ya I know what your talking about. I have noticed some problems there and edge weighting doesn't really get rid of it. I knew I had to add some poly's. I was going to use FI's_Edgesaw but I can't seem to find it and the site is down now.

I'm actually using a Revell model sadly lol. It gives me a decent look at the construction but I've made my own modifications.

Same thing I did when I was going to build mine, before I decided to do the coupe. Not bad reference material and quit a few sites that offer blue prints use them as reference material. So it's not a bad idea and as far as custom modifications, hey even engineers who design the stuff do it.

Forgot to add that if you do your knife cuts right, you can make it look like its a welded joint just like they are in real life.

I fixed the joints and have opted for sub-d inseat of catmull-clark.
Here is a close up of em. Don't mind the frame and chair those are just proxy. Also I think my roll cage is a bit to wide.

Oh and a little extra info. It rendered at 215k polys and only took 1m 1s. With final gather radiosity.

The roll cage and frame seem to be shaping up nicely, nice clean joints there.

Well I said more by Saturday but I never said what Saturday. So no major update on this. For now I'm reusing the old body but will use it to base a new one off of. Really I wanted to check out my paint preset on this car and really I think it looks great. Even if it shows off a lot of errors on the model lol. 3 area lights, Final Gather Radiosity, about 7 minutes for the first frame, 5 for second.

Being a huge NASCAR fan, I will watch this thread very closely. Your car has a very boxy shape, more like the COT's of today. Not sure whether you are modelling after a real stock car, or just using creative license. Either way, it is looking nice!! Looking forward to more updates.

To avoid any copyright issues I'm using creative license. lol There is no make for the car, and I'm giving it a very generic shape. Its a very long term project that I work on now and then. As you can see the last time I had touched this one was back in December.

Hehe, like I said in your post, the rollcage itself is all 1 mesh. I still have a few things to do to it too. Like add a couple cross bars for side impact support and then start on some sheet metal.

Gah I need hit. I just spent an hour working on a new body. It was looking good too, well Lightwave still doesn't like freezing with 2 layers active. And it crashed. I forgot to save ! lol OH well wasn't a lot of work as it was mostly just trying different things and I can redo what I had tried but once lightwave crashes I take it as a sign to stop for a bit. Will continue on it later or tomorrow.

Very wise... Once LW bombs out I usually take that as a sign to bug on out too.... Or perhaps shout a lot, throw the mouse on the desk and stomp around the room a bit

Na the time to start throwing things and stuff is when I work for several hours, get into one of them grooves. Loose track of time, get a lot done, then boom it crashes and you realize you last saved 3 hours ago. Even then you have to realize its your own fault for not saving.
