Default Transportation - McLaren MP4/8

First thread from me for a while! This is something I originally started (checks website) back in 2005. It was weighing on me a little, so I decided to dig it out and carry on with it. I didn't do that; instead I started from scratch

Having said that, the basic engine block and the covers I salvaged and fixed/improved... everything else is new.

Hey cheers

Observation of the day: blurry reflections equal stupidly long renders

Yea, blurred reflections are time killers. If you are using an image for your reflection you can speed things up by making a blurry copy or the image in Photoshop and substituting it.

Cool! Nice work! Are we going to have a whole car to go around it? Animation with the exhaust flames and the exhausts turning red to white hot? I still remember having time to watch F1 in those days...I have been so busy I haven't had a chance to watch in a long time!

Definitely the whole car... as for an animation, we'll have to wait and see hehe

Thanks Mook

Updates are probably going to be a bit sporadic, but I'll try not to take millennia between each one

At last an update

I started on the gearbox, then decided I wanted to do something I hadn't done at all on v1, so I did the brake assembly. I didn't like the idea of it floating in space so I have also modelled up the upper and lower rear wishbones (which aren't quite finished yet - at the point where they meet). Bell cranks for the pushrods are also in. I made a few material tweaks and halved the render time, which is nice I was going to move this into linear colour space for these renders, but that can wait for the next update now, as I wanted to get this out.

You are inspiring me. My very first completed 3D model, in 1991 was a Ferrari 189 which competed the same year as the McLaren. I have two copies of the Tamaya model. I really should redo it.

It looks great btw.

Ah, no, this is the 1993 McLaren. The Ferrari from that year was the F93A. The one with the white band running round cockpit level. (The '91 McLaren was the MP4/6).. wasn't the '91 Ferrari the 642? or are there multiple designations for it? I don't know.. google seems to work with both

Thanks. Hopefully they will survive the transition to linear space without me making them go all squiffy

You certainly know your Formula One. In actuality what I was thinking of, after I looked it all up was the MP5/5, which ran against the Ferrari 640, also known as the F189 for development, and I believe a number of races. The Ferrari was driven by Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger. It was the Ferrari F189, which didn't have the full air scoop like the 640. Anyway, I can't wait to see it progress. I'm still thinking I need to revisit the old F189.

Great work.

1989 then. Berger was with McLaren in 90 and 91, and Mansell left Ferrari at the end of 90 for Williams

It brings back my memories about Ayrton Senna.

Mansel, Senna, Prost, Berger and, later, the young Schummi... 90´s was one of the better moments for Formula One.
Back on topic, it´s a brilliant wip !

Thanks mate Yeah the early 90s had some great racing, that's for sure.

High time for another update Since the last one, I stripped out the wishbones I had done and replaced them (well realigned them, but rebuilt the outer part where they join together), completely rebuilt the uprights as they didn't seem right - more realignment of the wishbones was needed then so that they were connecting up in the right ways... then the rest of the suspension went it - rear tie bars and the pushrods. Next up the gearbox was worked on a bit, and the Bilstein shock absorbers were done too. Sorted out their rigging a little bit, although the spring/piston part doesn't operate yet. A few other little details here and there also Like the driveshaft and the rear brake cooling ducts (small variety - a larger one was used for the Australian GP so I will probably model that up as well at some point). Those bell cranks were massive before - don't follow Tamiya kits too closely (not at 1:20 scale anyway). These are much closer to the correct size. So that's were she's at right now

Well, it's not 100%, I can say that much Doing the best I can though with unclear photos (mainly because you can't see through all the cables and hoses) and a not completely accurate model kit for extra reference. Actually it turns out the shocks aren't entirely correct - it seems they used slightly different ones on the car during the season, but they are what you find on the car now... noticed that too late and I can't be arsed changing them

My dad hasn't watched F1 since Senna died. He has all of those old races on VHS.

Very Cool Model I'm loving the details

High time for an update!

The gearbox-top hydraulics are in (minus cables and hoses which I'll do later) - I spotted the displaced shader on the tall cylinder thing there well into that render, but it is fixed for the other one). There are the lumps on the sides of the gearbox as well, including the distinctive external gear wheels. There are a few more details to add around those bits but I was getting bored of working on the gearbox so I have left those for another time.

The first bit of bodywork appears Actually the bodywork for the car is 85-90% modelled, and has been even before the first post But as it isn't a finished part, you don't get to see the rest of it until later haha The first take on the Marlboro red is not vibrant enough... a further kick up will be needed there

I might move the focus to another part of the car next - been playing with the engine area for too long.

Cheers guys The old CPU is taking a hammering at render time with this though But that's just forcing me into doing optimisation work on the materials, which is no bad thing really.
