Default Movie & TV Related - Dune - Paul Muad'Dib Zbrush Sculpt

OK, been wrangling with this over Christmas break on and off. First time I've really had a go at trying to create a likeness in Zbrush. Whole thing is created from a polysphere 'cept the hair which is a seperate object. Will need some retopologising to facilitate getting more details. Ears are place holders, hair is nowhere near finished.

I'm not happy with the likeness but I'm beginning to see the character in the sculpt.

Would welcome all the crits and comments anyone can give. This will hopefully end up being 3D printed so the likeness needs to stand without the aid of a texture.

It looks a bit like the 80's "Hoff" from Knight Rider...

Hehe, no not the hoff, (although I can see the likeness. I think its the hair.)

Going to retopologise tomorrow night and that will facilitate tweaking a lot easier at lower resolutions.

The face reminds me a little of the guy who played Spike in Buffy but the hair and the shape of the head would be wrong.

Looks exactly like Paul Atreides (Dune). I agree with youngheart80. Nice sculpt. I'm about to try out Mudbox for the first time. Have you ever tried Mudbox? How are you liking ZBrush? ZBrush is an awesome application, but the layout and menus confuse the hell out of me!

Hehe, I still look at that first shot and can only see the Hoff. I wasn't going to let on, as I really wanted it to get to the stage that there was no doubt but there have been a couple of guesses at Paul Atreides.

I spent this evening retopologising, and then using the move brush to manipulate the forms a lot more. I also got a Gnomon video on Sculpting a likeness and there was some good stuff in there. I also found a tutorial on the net about using photoshop to comp your sculpt on actual photos, and then removing bits of it to make sure that each part looks the part. The mouth was by far the hardest to get close, but I am a lot happier in general.

I plan to do some more tweaking of this tonight. In the meantime, anyone got any views or areas that they think don't look right?

Sorry, I had confirmed that it is meant to be Paul Atredies (Kyle McLachlan).

I was just looking for other eyes to say what was right/wrong about it.

Sure thing sir.

I am using many different angles for reference, but here are the front and side views.

He was so young then.....
Make the jaw slight broader along the lower edge.
Make teh cheek bone slightly broader as well.

His bone structure almost creates an X shape rather than a square or round shape.

Not that I'm any expert, but I tend to think in terms of profiles, landmarks
and their relationships. The markup shows the sort of things that go on
constantly in my head when I'm sculpting.

Ultimately, the process is to build the profile to the proper depths, match
the widths of the features and their position relative to other features, then
tweak in three quarter view, and polish using other views for reference....
One thing that may be robbing you a little bit is that you cannot get the two
views to match up exactly, in my example I had to rotate the side view back
(the front view is from a slightly low angle), but the eyes would not line up.
His brows are higher in the profile, and the eyelids open wider, so it requires
a little bit of judgement, but if the major forms are in place, the rest should follow.

Cheers guys. Didn't get much chance to do anything with it tonight.

Sean: Like the idea of the X and I see what you mean.

Woody: Thanks for the markup. Problem is that I haven't really been using these views. I did that with the first attemps (which you saw), but in Zbrush, it's not very easy to use references like these. I may go back and model the base mesh in LW as I will find it easier to get right I think. I will find images that match better I think.

Thanks for your help guys.

Though if you still want to model the base in Lightwave, I wouldn't fault you -
I (almost) always start with a basemesh from an outside modeling application.

Oh I know 'how' to do it, I just find it cumbersome at best, and greatly depends on the image you're using. I bought a tutorial on modelling a likeness using Zbrush, and it stayed completely away from image plane. Which is what I did for this mesh. I'll come back with the LW mesh (although my objective was doing it in ZBrush only )
